It happens on other forums when they get bored or run out of the principle subject matter, anyone ride bikes? With or without motors? Dinghy Sailors often go as far as to own Bike companys, (the Pedal Type) and lots of us ex windsurfers ride ATBs and Motorbikes, I've got a couple of Scramblers..
Can post pics if anyones interested, swap notes?

Full downhill spec bike, x country full sus, race bike. Motor bike. I feel embarrassed sometimes by my possessions, kayaks, boats, all the gear to go with all the equipment, just spent £600 on a pair of motorbike boots. I suppose it keeps people in work.

Why not.
Done a heck of a lot more cycle hours than sailing hours over the last 12 months.
One beneficial side effect, much better leg endurance for trapezing the Contender (only sailed two person with my wife a few times, regular crew different household) especially for those playful free reaches when balancing on rear quarter deck.

Carbon XC HT MTB mostly on the haul roads and bridleways of our Forestry England neighbour.
edit add. Snowboard & boots off eBay for self taught back country riding from home.

I've found road cycling to be pretty good partner to sailing. I hate sailing in no wind, but that's when road cycling is best!

I like the MTB too and would probably ride that over the roadie, except the hassle of cleaning muddy bikes. I just ride a hardtail cross country bike, seems the best tool for the job of covering miles in the South Downs.

I fell into the Electric Mountain Bike Trap last winter with a Whyte 150RS and feel dirty everytime I use it, but at least the family building them have great Dinghy heritage, Derek Farrant was a 505 World Champion and Guy Farrant who now owns and runs Whyte Bikes had a lot of Dinghy success that he's too modest to trumpet, but it was thanks to him I got into Dinghy Sailing at the hands of his loaned MPS and don't forget Orange was Lester Nobles company another fine dinghy sailor.

As to the Electric Bike if as I did you use ATBs for exercise, don't do it, they are the spawn of Satan.

eBikes akin to crack cocaine; once tried a hard habit to kick?

I've swapped to one briefly on a hilly ride, had to give it back smartish, I daren't trust myself Evil Smile

No judgement though, live and let live. After all I sail a Contender for fun because I'm too lazy to hike a Laser.

I currently have an old Orange G3 'bitsa' hard-tail mountain bik ae, Merida road bike, a very old Saracen Kili Flyer magnesium frame single speed I built using spare bits from when I sold my original '90s Orange Clockwork. Before that I had a Tushingham mountain bike from before Lester Noble left to form Orange (I also raced with Tushingham sails in my Div 1 and early Raceboard days). I was out on the G3 yesterday for a couple of hours. Back in the day I had various motorcycles but sold my last one in the mid '80s.

I still have some windsurfing kit and sail it occasionally, a kayak, snowboard, a couple of kites (but I sold the kite moubntain board) and a 4.5m 50HP RIB (in my defence it's because my wife likes it...).

I have a full carbon e-road bike - an Orbea Gain M20 2019. Its a fab bike to ride with or without the motor on. The motor is set purely for mild hill assistance up a steep hill nearby. Pre-Covid, I used it to commute the 8 miles each way to the office and the occassional leisurely ride out. I try not to be a Mamil ....

People need to get over the 'electric' bit. If it gets more people riding, then thats a good thing. They arn't electric mopeds after all

I also have the bike mounted on a Saris Fluid 2 indoor smart trainer for those crappy weather days - like all the time at the moment.

I think E-bikes are a great idea. In a hilly area it can be a bit of a chore to get over enough hills to make a ride worth while. E-bike reduces that barrier to the sport.
Everyone has their own comfortable exercise level, so having a motor isn't likely to make anyone slack off, they'll just go further. and if being able to go a little further, I.e. do two laps of a hill rather than 1, where a single laps wouldn't be worth leaving home for... then well it's obvious e-bikes are great for the sport and peoples wellbeing.
I'm lucky that I'm young and fit enough to ride all day enjoy it. But it won't always be that way, and I hope I can use an e-bike to keep me outdoors exercising for longer.

Tell me you don't use the electric mode on the trainer?

I once saw a documentary where they had a bunch of cyclists hitched up to that sort of thing, but they were dynamo's and the deal was to power a family in a house, using batches of cyclists, lots of them, they'd take turns whilst having refreshment resting etc, Then suddenly word would go out.. Mount up everyone she's put the kettle on and is going to start ironing...

Talk about powering a light.
Does anyone recall those Sturmey-Archer hub dynamos to power lights? A massive leapt in efficiency from the ones that looked like a small Coke bottle with a knurled wheel on the top which drove off the tyre, they felt like a brake was half on when engaged.

Ah, technology hey?  And we thought that was the last word on lighting for your bike.

Off-Topic - I absolutely  love the Firefly. My school near Ipswich had a fleet of them I sailed and raced them in the River Stour as part of the school racing team. I would buy one tomorrow ... as well as a 505. (wistful sigh)

Mmm I am down to four bikes at the moment. I ) Van nickolas. titanium road bike  ( best bike ) 2) A Rose aliminium road bike with a top of the range group set , bought second hand . I didn’t need it , but it was such a bargain it would has been stupid not to buy it , lol . 3) A Ribble winter bike for riding in the wet , mudguards are a good idea sometimes . And last , at the moment 4) A old school mtb, a KHS Montana Comp , it was an entry level racer, no suspension anywhere but it has a lovely double butted steel frame and LX group set . I will never sell it, cost me £600 in 1995 at a time when money was tight and I worked a lot of weekend overtime to be able to buy it. I used to also have at least one other bike on the go at anyone time , as I used to ride to work and if your doing that it’s all ways best to have a bike you wouldn’t mind being stolen lol.

Also it has to be said before this thread goes any further the answer to all cycling related questions is  N +1

The world missed a trick not adopting that Alto, a lighter, cheaper, easier to sail 5oh. I still miss it, and the company of crew of course.

I dare say the Alto was a nice boat but the Osprey (and in smaller numbers the Javelin) pretty much has had that alternative to FiveO niche owned for a long while.

Oh yes also have an Orange Gringo I bought 2nd hand off a mate over 20 yrs ago.

Ha I've still got a Gringo, paying extortionate storage costs for it amongst other kids stuff, why do we hang onto this stuff. She's never going to use it again, nor am I, what is it with hording old sh*t?

I've just ordered a new MTB after the last one got nicked from a bike storage place.

A Canyon Lux, replacing an Ibis Ripley.

It's the same price as a new Laser. and tbh, totally over-spec'd for my needs and skill level, but the riding around here is insanely good.

I will get an eMTB one day, just not yet.

I also have a single-speed Charge MTB - 27.5 fattish tyres, perfect for dicking around in the park with the kids and using as my main in-city transport and the odd beach hop.

I meant this to be about bikes with motors having ordered another due to lockdown boredom, going for that CCM blackout... Never even sat on it, yet paid up front, must be mad, well having mental health issues like millionaire Princes, through not being on the water.

I haven't regretted selling many things, can't think of a boat, a board or a guitar but I do regret selling two vehicles, my scruffy old MX5 in 2019 and, especially, my equally scruffy 1981 GS1000. Bikes are somewhat easier to restore which could have been my lockdown project if I still had it. If I had a time machine and could reverse one deal that would be it...

Canyon Lux looks rather slick. The big air gang and gnarly downhill jockeys are all about long travel but those (me) who simply like up n down trails short travel light XC does the job a treat. I love my Bianchi Nitron, heading for pension age and not craving e assist on this lightweight as yet.

Time machine? Give me one of those, the things I wouldn't have let go, hmm lets think Vincent Comet, Indian Chief (Beaten Up 1947 with sidecar)62 California Bonnie, '85 Gamma 250 (they're fetching stupid money now, the Mrs wasn't grateful at me accidently wheelying away from a wine bar and dropping her in the road when she was pregnant with our first, bloody things were useless at low end..)I even let my Harley go for silly money not long since ago, needed room for bloody sailing dinghys. #StupidRus

I tend to ride fire roads, gravel and farm roads around here.... a bit of single track through the treelines, but nothing too gnarly.

It's all about getting out in the open for me and decompressing, so I think the XC options are fairer game than some ballsy weapon with 150+ travel.

This is kind of typical up in the Serra Calderona:

For me it would be a mint, original 1981 Suzuki GS1000ET (the one I sold though mine was far from mint by then), A black 1971 UK spec Bonneville 750 (didn't sell that one, it was stolen, I could probably work out the date and catch the b'stards red handed), a Ducatti 998 SP and (just 'cos I love the song) a 1952 Vincent Black Lightning...

I had a gs550 circa 1980 with a sidecar, kept it about 3 years, only almost turned it over once, (first day I had it LOL didn't let it put me off, tougher back then and barmy), bike solo was brilliant, nothing has good as modern bikes though, faster, smoother, better brakes, better finish, more reliable, BMW gs 1200, perfect, except for weight.
