Thinking of buying a new watch for running, and I've seen there are a number of sailing timers in the garmin app store.
Has anyone used any of them? Any good?

You'll need to read your class rules carefully. A lot of the rules ban devices which show VMG, current speed through water, etc.
Some have only just allowed digital compasses!

Would only be using mine for training - mostly for running but would be interesting to see speed too whilst out training in my boat. Would not use when racing as frankly there is too much going on to look at speed!

Yes, I had the Garmin Quatix 5, but sold it last year for an Apple Watch (only because I wanted ApplePay or Bank card support) . Useful info for sailing, but as ColPrice2002 says, be aware of your class rules.

I’ve used a Garmin Vivoactive 3 for this, I’ve used an application on it called “Race Countdown”. It will count down your start sequence, and record your GPS track, which you can then upload to Strava etc.. The Vivoactive 3 is one of their cheaper wearable devices but is fine for this, and will also record your heart rate from its built in wrist sensor, you don’t really need anything better for sailing. Its also good for cycling, running, swimming etc..

I have a Garmin Quatix 5. Its great for everything apart from what I bought it for - dinghy racing.
Its brilliant for bike rides, rowing, hiking, even open water swimming, but racing - not so good.
Firstly the distance to line feature (why I bought it). Its too slow to update. It says I am 5m behind the line when I am on it. Then it catches up a few seconds later it tells me I am over the line. Its OK for off shore racers but not for dinghy racing.
Secondly the countdown display is too small. I thought it would expand to fill the screen, but it doesn't - its hardly readable, especially if using with the distance to line feature.
I have downloaded 2 apps which have a bigger countdown display, but my old Suunto gives a much clearer countdown, and is easier to use, so I have reverted to that.
So all in all I love its features and look - but don't buy it for dinghy racing (unless I have missed something in set up).

I’m lucky enough to have a teenage programmer in the house, so if I don’t find an app I like I’ll get him to tweak one. Will be getting him to make a Europe Class compliant one too.

Chris, have you tried using the Apple Watch on the water? I know there is a Waterspeed app for it but I’m a little concerned about the security of the watch on my wrist to try it yet.....really don’t want to see several hundred pounds of tech sinking to the bottom of our pond

Yeah, was worried myself when I first used it on the water but then the cost of the Apple Watch is not dissimilar to the Garmin I had also. Works fine though

But its a lot more than the Casio Pathfinder I normally use though.....good to hear you've not had issues. The design of the strap does look like it stops the end getting snagged by ropes, etc, that would normally undo a strap. I might have to give it a try

I'll be upfront and declare I have an interest here as I have written a couple of apps available on the Garmin store aimed exactly at (Hopefully) what you're looking for.
But as they're free to download and use, no hidden charges. Not even a "Buy me a coffee" button this isn't a commercial plug
I bought a garmin fenix 5 watch earlier in the year and was disappointed with what was available for dinghy racers / sailors. So I wrote an app I thought I would use instead of my old Optimum watch.
Then I thought I'd add tack tic compass functions. Adding speed was easy so I added that as well. Recording the track was another thing I wanted so I added that and published it on the Garmin store just to see if anyone else wanted to use it
https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/d4d101fd-a3a1-41ab-b1ef-e1141b7b4925" rel="nofollow - https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/d4d101fd-a3a1-41ab-b1ef-e1141b7b4925
Someone commented on the facebook page I'd setup, saying it was not class legal for most classes. Which is true including the one I sail in (RS600)
So I stripped out alot of the functionality leaving just the timer and the track recording. Although not strictly legal to record the track in some classes, if you can't look at until you're off the water what's the harm?
And uploaded the simpler / (hopefully) legal app. https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/d24109e9-2fa4-4dc6-bc44-4240c97a10db" rel="nofollow - https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/d24109e9-2fa4-4dc6-bc44-4240c97a10db
The tracks will upload to strava without you having to do anything. If there's a few of you recording, using phones, garmin watches, apple watches whatever, it's great to watch the flybys which effectively give you a race replay on Strava.
Would be great to get some feedback

Sounds ideal but it's not compatible with my Vivoactive 3
TBF, I'm struggling with RaceQs and Race Countdown timer on the watch (and Garmin's help is hopeless, much worse than Apple's and that's not up to much for minority interest apps) and I don't really use Strava so I'd probably better persevering with RQs.

I tried RaceQs myself before starting my own app, I didn't really get on with it. It's because of RaceQs I didn't support the touch screen watches. Somewhere in their ducumentation it said that water and touch screens don't work too well, and as my watch isn't touch screen I thought I'd save myself the pain of trying to make it work without being able to test it properly. Sorry.

No problem with the lack of touch screen, RQs turns it off, but Gamin IQ won't let me download your app. All I need is to be able to start and stop it, preferably with an option to preset the start timer, or skip it altogether though, with only one button, I guess that would require touchscreen access.
I like a lot of what RaceQs does and the animations of sailed races are great but I don't need to post it online for all to see....

Quatix 5 not listed as compatible, and surely that's the most common Garmin sailing watch I've tried race Q's and Garmins own app. The thing both lack or I've failed to find is a good replay system, so one can compare performance lap to lap esp if trying different sailing styles eg footing off a bit up wind or different angles down wind. Does Strave do this? I though that was for cycling. The other thing I've found difficult esp with the Garmin app, is multiple races, seem to have to exit the app and restart. Maybe better that way in any case to split the data up more.

The quatix 5 is definitely in the list of compatible devices. I don't have one so can't prove Garmin allow you to download it though. Can you try again.<br> You can set the app to only record whilst the timer is running. So if you restart the timer after each race you will get separate tracks. No need to exit the app. Here's the link again https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/d24109e9-2fa4-4dc6-bc44-4240c97a10db" rel="nofollow - https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/d24109e9-2fa4-4dc6-bc44-4240c97a10db

Quatix 5 was "hidden" after Fenix 5, Quatix 6 was the only quatix with an individual entry. Anyway successfully downloaded both versions, seem to work, have to try out properly next time I sail. Was wondering if te fuigures could be bigger on the timer version as there is screen space or is that a platform limit?
On a different subject has anyone used Strava for post session analysis, or is it too cycling specific to be useful?

I record quite a few of my sails on a garmin cycle computer. It syncs through the garmin app and goes up to strava ( https://www.strava.com/activities/3988819855" rel="nofollow - link to example ).
Mostly I am recording GPS so I can overlay that data to video later, so I can do a better job at telling the story of races on youtube (see below). POV and onboard shots are great at getting the in boat action, but can be very disorientating, so having an overlay with position on course, speed, heading and heart rate I think adds a little.
Do I use strava for post sailing analysis? Well, not really. The interface is excellent, and it works so much better and easier than anything else. Within seconds I can see top speed, average speed, where we went on the course and heart rate. But that alone doesn't really give you anything to analyse in any meaningful way.
The sailracer and https://www.beat-racing.co.uk/" rel="nofollow - beat racing apps are trying to handle the GPS data in a more sailing relevant way. But, they're no where near as polished as strava.
But, what it boils down to, and is still kind of true with the sailing specific apps, is that I don't think GPS alone is a great tool for sailing analysis. I can't say I've really learnt anything from it, after using it extensively. Camera's on the other hand I find invaluable.
I am really liking the the trickle down load sensing technology of the likes of https://www.trusail.com/" rel="nofollow - trusail (bespoke load sensors and high frequency GPS) and https://www.cyclopsmarine.com/" rel="nofollow - cycolops (generic, micro and transferable load sensors) making it's way to dinghies. Dinghy sailing channel has a review coming up of https://sailmon.com/max/" rel="nofollow - Sailmon Max which uses gps and inclinometers.
For me an ideal dinghy training computer would be 1) High frequency gps 2) TWA /AWA + wind speed 3) heel and pitch 4) bluetooth to load sensors 5) ping location . . . . [TUBE]https://youtu.be/w44vcOoYO-c[/TUBE]

I use the Garmin data overlaid on video to give speed, heading and heart rate. Plan is to use it to work on my free pumping to get the right balance between vmg and cardiac arrest!

I know the problem, I suffered an 'episode' back in the day when racing Raceboards, sudden fatigue and runaway heart rate that took about 18 hours to settle. The doc though it was down to dehydration and over exertion. It was bloody scary at the time.
Back on topic, I have bought a Vivoactive 3 and am finding the Garmin Connect app an absolute nightmare.... TBF I've been exclusively Apple for about 10 years and brief forays into Android have not been a succes. But a long web chat with Garmin support has proved fruitless trying to make the damn thing work as I would have expected. I can record 'activities' and store them in the cloud but they default to metric and changing them on the watch doesn't change them in the phone or web apps, there is not an app for Windows/OSX so you have to use 'Garmin Express' as an intermediary. Lots of other things that don't do what I expect to. I'm pretty good with tech but this is driving me up the wall
On the plus side it seems to work ok with RaceQs

Do you not have the garmin connect app on your phone? You can change metric to imperial under the user setting in there.
Garmin express on the PC is a pile of crap.
To be honest, garmin software, apps and website is awful. I only use it to get the info to strava via blue tooth.

I have rapidly reached that conclusion. But yes I do have GC on the iPhone, still struggling with it TBH it simply doesn't have some of the options you'd expect, or they are very well hidden.
They seem obsessed with Golf too which doesn't help, about 60% of the user guide talks about Golf and the rest is pretty useless. I think when I get to grips with it and, in particular RaceQs it'll do nicely, I only want it for sailing, cycling and walking so once I can get the units right (pace in mins/km for walking? WTF is that all about ) and work out how to export track data to the Macbook I'll be fine.
TBH I bought it as a more convenient replacement for my very old Etrex handheld...

Bigger numbers is already on my list of enhancements. The text at the moment is the largest font available. I'm looking at drawing the text as images or lines. I wiill post an update on the facebook page when that is done. Strava is quite good for flybys, but not much good for any in depth analysis. There's another app http://gpsactionreplay.free.fr/" rel="nofollow - http://gpsactionreplay.free.fr/ which is quite good but a bit clunky

If you download the Garmin Virb software, you can overlay any track / gpx data with any video. You don't need a Virb. I've got a cheap Go Pro clone that does quite well. Nothing like the editorial / production quality of Mozzie's videos though

I tried a number of the sailing apps on the Garmin app store and didn't find one that provided the information that I want while I'm racing, so being a software developer, I wrote one.
The feedback I've gotten is very positive so you might find it's a fit for you.

Been my experience that Garmin and Macs don't mix which is a shame, pity that app wasn't written for the Apple watch, the current sailing app is pants. Screen usually waits til ten seconds to go before going blank, then Siri pops up and asks if there's anything you need..
Problem with Garmin you used to need a PC to do anything snesible like downloading your speed data off their watches, gave up on them years ago, got drawers full of Foreunners and ForeTrex, all next to useless for sailing.

Hello iGRF, Garmin's software certainly isn't wonderful but they have been making improvements over time and I just checked with a Mac user who sails with my app. He tells me that downloading tracks works fine through the Garmin Connect web site and you can download in several formats. He also uses Garmin Express on the Mac and Garmin Connect on his phone. All apparently work as well as they work on the PC. Express sometimes wipes out app settings which is a pain but in general they work for Mac users these days.
As for the apple watch, I considered supporting it.
The key reasons that I decided not to are:
- 1) They exhaust the battery charge quickly. I charge my Garmin Forerunner 245 Music about once a week.
- 2) Touch screens can be a problem in a wet environment.
- 3) My understanding is that Apple watch apps are generally dependent on an app running on the iPhone. I want something that's not dependent on a phone to the greatest degree possible.
- 4) Cost. I began running my app on Garmin's Vivoactive HR. They run around $125 refurbished. They use a touch screen so there's a tradeoff there, but that's what I started with. My Forerunner 245 Music cost around $250. A friend who runs Sail2WIN on a Forerunner 245 Music gave his Apple watch away after switching over to the 245. The Apple watch does things the 245 does not (cell connection) but overall he's happier with the 245.

I bought my Garmin Vivoactive 3 specifically to run Race Qs but it is not great, as suggested the touch screen causes problems and may be responsible for the app stopping recording tracks mid session. I'll persevere for now as I don't have a recent Apple Watch, my original version is not waterproof but I'm seriously considering buying an Apple Watch 3 or SE which conform to ISO 22828:2010 with a 50m depth rating.
