Obviously the Alto immediately springs to mind, but now I'm semi trap capable does the team think an RS800 is feasible to encourage a fit young kitesurfer of my acquaintance into the joys and knowledge we all share?

I had a go on one many years ago when someone swapped wih me to have a go in the MPS and the helm was a pretty handy SI plus it wasn't that windy and I always felt it was quite a nice well balanced boat, but my fixed plate prejudice always kept it at bay, and the lack of the swinging pole but seem to recall it had at least a kick up rudder for beach launch/recovery.

Saw one absolutely cream the Round Mersea race one year and a couple of lads from the lake are campaigning one over at Downs.

So, how do-able is it? The guy is wind knowledgeable, but not boat capable in any way shape or form, too big a leap of faith?

RS 800 is supposed to be a piece of piss compared to others of its ilk so you'd be fine with a bit of practice and watch Mozzy on youtube. Doddle.

I wouldn’t like to say whether you and your friend would be capable of enjoying sailing an 800, but you would probably find something like the 400 easier, or a Fireball.

The 800 is easier than it looks, but as with any twin trapeze boat it does demand more helm crew coordination than a single trapeze boat. If either on of you had any 800 experience then the other would get up to speed quite quickly but as you would be new to it, and your crew is new to sailing, then it wont be an easy introduction to skiff sailing. Not as hard as learning to sail in a Musto but going down that road.

Although not as fast or exciting I would have thought the Alto would be the perfect boat for this situation?

I have reservations about suggesting this given your liking for light boats, which the Spice definitely isn't. But, it is cheap as chips, bulletproof, easy to sail for a twin trap assy boat and great fun.
