Saw them on facebook and wondered how effective they'd be for drop hiking, then I thought, even if they were, they'd get banned straight out of hand.

If they are for physical reasons no class association will ban them.

I would have thought they would to be honest.  But then I’d ban hiking pants if it were up to me.

That thing appears to be providing mechanical assistance to the leg muscles and the knee joint. What next - an exoskeleton?
Quite apart from the potential damage it could to the the boat...

Tbh it looks like it would be extremely uncomfortable to hike in.
I don't see how class associations are malignant in anyway though They are only a group of people with similar aims as in they sail the same boat, want a roughly level fleet to sail in and want to protect their investment in some way and that varies from really strict OD boats like a Laser to development classes like the Int 14.
If you want to do something else, either get involved and work to change things in the class or just form your own class.

Sailing is run by mysterious men in smoke filled rooms, they don't speak much.

Apparantly members of class associations are killing sailing as we dont want to morph the boats we sail into something totally different. And if a class association decides to alter things, it becomes a "lipstick" class.

All in all, just a crock of sh*t from someone who can't understand a sport not run by corporations.

Don't talk to me about corporate interference in sailing, it was pressure from the manufacturers that destroyed small volume race board builders. They lobbied the IYRU to change a 'rule' class (Div 1)  into a 'manufacturer' class where only boards built by 'approved' manufacturers were allowed. This has resulted in there only being one builder of raceboards and prices have gone through the roof (€4.5k hull only anybody?). It's not as if they are any lighter either these days, my old Mistral Equipe II weighed 12kg (it actually needed 1kg of lead correctors to bring it up to min weight) the new Phantom weighs 13.5kg. The Phantom is reputed to be super fragile too, my old Equipe was tough as old boots. Bloody brilliant board.....

I’ll second that. I still dig my Equipe out now and again and always reminded just how amazing old skool raceboards were (are)
