Does anybody know of a mobile app both (IOS and Android) that can be used for simple dinghy sign on and off for typical club racing ? ( For both class and handicap racing)... Just a simple app that states you are going on /off the water, with input of sail number, class of boat and race event details etc.... ------------- Nobby. |

When the time and circumstances permit, in our club it means rather than picking up pens and paper and going INTO the club (doors etc) we would like the ability to sign on and off via a mobile phone app from say the dinghy park / car etc. (Changing also in the car or at home as well if local). Also most competitors seem to lose all ability to write there name clearly at the weekends on a signing on/off sheet!!.. Anyway, I coding up my own sign on/off for a mobile app... ------------- Nobby. |

A more radical approach, get rid of signing on totally. Have the RO mark down every boat out there to race. In the average club, the race team will know 90% of names, and can check the others. ------------- Firefly 2324, Puffin 229, Minisail 3446 Mirror 70686 |

And us. We tried a computer based signing on system a few years ago, people forgot to do it, then had to sail up to the race box and say they forgot ... just another barrier to entry ... so we scrapped it. ------------- Happily living in the past |

Think we all understand the need for it with large events and on open water . But for 90% of us in this country we are sailing on small 100 acre puddles, all launching from the same spot ( unfortunately no sandy beach lol ) and sailing 50 to 100m to the start which is often inline with the starting box/hut. There is just no need for it. TBH in my class we haven’t even signed on and off after ever race at our nationals for the last few years . |

Our club is next to a public hard/slipway, lots of other people just cruising about, and we have just 1 person (RO) in the starting box running the races, so having a clean digital/legible sign on /off is the way to go.. Anyway after lots of chat there is no published app that does this simple job...

Any boats missed at the start can always be noted after lap 1. In general, if I have a sign on sheet, I'll only fill in the race timing sheet at the end of lap one anyway, so that the order will stay roughly similar for ease of use at the finish.
I'm not suggesting this for a 100 boat Nationals off Mounts Bay, but for a 10 to 15 boat fleet at Little Snoring SC where you could (and often will, with the rules ignored) push off from the bank with 30 seconds to go and still make the start line. ------------- Firefly 2324, Puffin 229, Minisail 3446 Mirror 70686 |

We run a largish Regatta with boats coming to the start line from a beach in one direction and a boat park with a slipway in the other, we put a rescue boat by the beach who log numbers and radio the RO and our watch house team record those coming from the boat park. The absolute fundamental rule is to have a point in the course where you can record a running order, either by passing through the line, or at a turning mark. Always finish on a beat, finish on a run at your peril. If I am OD I run my iPhone in recording mode with a clip on microphone at the start and finish. ------------- Happily living in the past |

monday.com offers a simple web form interface onto a 21st century websheet. It would take me 2 minutes to 'code' it using their non-coding required platform. you simply need to create a master data table and then you can create a form view which you can either 'share' directly or embed in a website page. Fields needed: Name / Class / Sail Number / Number of Crew / Crew Name 2 / Crew Name 3 / ... / Membership Number? then a Status field: 'sign on' or 'sign off' Each time someone fills in the webform it adds a new 'pulse' - or entry to table. The time and date are auto-recorded - you now have potentially live data on who is on and who is back off the water, using sortable columns and filtered by date - easy to see and use. The system is the easy bit - members adherence to it is another matter entirely.
