" Just twelve feet long, with a hull weight of only 50kg the Cherub combines spectacular downhill performance with the "on the edge" handling characteristics only found in true high performance boats. Get your heart racing in the best twin-trapeze boat for mixed and lighter weight crews.

Cherub sailing is where the challenge extends to setting up the boat to suit the sailor, and may be even designing and building too. The Cherub is one of the most interesting and innovative of all dinghies. "

That was the official answer anyway! The whole 'light weight' thing is only a suggestion if you want to go fast on handicap though as some of us lardys have exceptional fun when the wind picks up a bit. I for one am a big fan of the class not only for the sailing but also due to the fact that the boats are very customisable so you are able to make your perfect boat!

Due to the nature of the Development classes you will find that they all vary so some of the older designs will be made of wood. All the recent boats have been made using foam sandwich with either glass or carbon. They are very lightweight with relatively big kites so exceptionally quick off the wind!

Length: 12ft
Beam: 6ft
Min Hull Weight: 50kg
Upwind sail area: 15.5sqm
Gennaker: 21sqm

Often constructed from carbon sandwhich. Wood is now very rarely used.

They tend to be very very fast downwind, due to large sail area and a light hull. However, they tend to struggle when in displacement mode due to lack of length.

The Cherub is a development class, meaning sailors are free to modify their boats within a few basic rules. These rules are reviewed and updated on a regular basis and encourage good technical knowledge and innovation within the class.

They support a relatively light crew with typical (all up) crew weights being 18-25stone

Best bet is to visit the Class Association website as it is regularly updated and you will see what cherubs are all about...

thnx 4 all of them. that cleared up the "wood" issue. what would be a good price for a competetive second hand boat, or would i have to go the whole hog and get a new one? would you say it is a good step up from a 29er? again thanks for any answers.

thnx for the offer but i am not looking for a new boat yet. i was just musing on what to do when i get bored/too big for a 29er. cherubs look like great boats and from what ive seen on here the competition would be quite entertaining. its definitly worth considering. the thing i am realy interested in is should it be 49er, cherub or other next? any unbiased opinions will be useful.

My opinion is totaly biassed but I know of at least one person who sailed a cherub, then moved 'up' into a 49er only to sell it 6 months later and get another cherub because it just didnt have the same buzz.
The speed on paper is not what matters in having fun, its the impression of speed and nothing creates that feeling better than a short boat with a lot of rag.

Just so you all know the price of Sweet Dreams has been dropped to £2200! I really need to sell it soon! It comes complete and ready to get your heart racing on the water or to convert in time for the new season with a double stacking combi trailer and under over covers, kevlar main, dacron jib, 2 kites, angell carbon mast and boom. Most importantly this boat is only 50.5Kg's so is incredibly light!

If you're interested PM me ASAP!

Rich
