I would just get an old goPro - I got one of the original versions a while back for pennies off eBay and it works a treat plus if I were to lose it then it was a few quids fun.

I have quite an old GoPro (Hero 3?) and it's amazing but the footage I've seen from the really early ones is not good. Mine seems to have much better image stabilisation than the earlier ones, it really is remarkable and the resolution is more than adequate (supposedly HD but not 4k).

Still should be available for peanuts on ebay though. I'll try to remember to get the exact model and post on here tomorrow.

Here is a short clip from my first generation goPro, the first version they ever released. Not sure what Sam is talking about (like normal!!) - looks pretty stable to me!

Yup, nowt wrong with that, probably seen too many dodgy YouTube vids.

Here's my first effort  http://vimeo.com/100984487" rel="nofollow - http://vimeo.com/100984487

My GoPro is a Hero 3 and was what I used to film that vid. BTW the original quality/resolution is much higher than the Vimeo video

Consensus, both here and elsewhere, seems to be a second hand GoPro is better than a brand new clone.

Looking on eBay there seem to be plenty of 3s and 4s for similar money to the budget clones, so that’s what I’ll do.

Cheers

Sj4000 or sj5000 I got one manufactured by Qumox I think. Many copies but the genuine ones are very good and came with mounts, case and all sorts for about £40. Very good quality output too

I have the Coolicam £54.00 ish which works fine but has no sound when recording (luckily as I talk to myself at times when sailing)  fairly idiot proof although a certain Phantom/k1/ Osprey sailor managed to mostly film his rib drivers backside when doing a bit of coaching. This caused much hilarity when shown later to all us hoping for feedback on our lack of style.

I use an SJ Cam M10 and it's great.
Came with waterproof case and, during my RS600 years, survived many many submarine trips LOL
It's a good few years old, has taken a battering and continues to work with no issue whatsoever.

I don't think it's made anymore but I'd recommend SJ Cams in a heartbeat.

We will never know of course, but it would be useful to see how much someones sailing style and boat trim changed when comparing " on camera" to off

That's why I'm doing it. Either proof that I hike like a pussy (so I fix it) or subliminally turn me into a hero till it becomes habit!

Veho - make cheap action camera's, with good image quality.
Veho VCC-006-K2s - £66

Moving up the scale. I prefer Drift Innovation cameras to GoPro's.

The current range starts at £124 + £24 for a waterproof case.

You are likely to find older models much cheaper. Like the Drift HD. Which is still a great camera.
