Beer mats on butts?
Time was every brand was lined up on the butts of dinghy botherers in the bar at Grafham water, we all thought they were very strange. Not that sort of beer mat. These were larger things, akin to tea towels. The idea was to make the unsophisticated waterproofs of those days less prone to ripping and less skiddy on the boat. Think they're called bar towels these days.

Every bar had them, you used it to wipe the bottom of your pint before taking it to the table they were everywhere no doubt dodgy dinghyists nicked them, I'm not even sure what they sewed them to, but it was some sort of 'badge of honour' shorts maybe, then the shorts over the wetsuit, (and they call kiters out for doing that these days). This particular memory dates back to '78. So I wonder what happened, they started jailing dinghyists ? Pubs still use them , they just don’t put them on the bar anymore. I haven’t seen them on sailing suits since the early 90s . There is just so much choice in sailing clothing these days, which wasn’t the case in the 50s/60s and 70s, there is just no need to do it .

Musto heavy jacket (had to take to the waters edge and walk on it for a while) Number 1 stretch suits (matched to your spinnaker) Flotherchoc buoyancy aids (minimalist once you had burst all the floats) Holt buoyancy aid (in purple - suits you sir) Dunlop Magisters Musto boots Smiths sailing stopwatches (in rubber around the neck case) Javlin two piece wetsuit Javlin fleece jackets that pilled Alpha Mackenzie trapeze harnesses An unfortunate purple tank top ... ------------- Happily living in the past |

Above my desk as I type I look at a rather unfortunate 40 year old photo of me sailing a Laser in said yellow wellies, Number One stretch suit and protecting my Holt buoyancy aid and Javlin wetsuit underneath. I also had more hair then, and an unfortunate taste in glasses. ------------- Happily living in the past |

Our ‘winkies’ (a boiler suit made from thick gagoole material) weren’t water proof so a few stitches in the butt area didn’t affect performance. We invented layering, double trackie bottoms under the winky. Who needed wet suit boots, we had pumps, certainly lasted longer than a few premium brands I could mention. Buoyancy aid, manually inflating life jacket. But the coolest thing on a the planet, GP14 that had a golf club shaft, not a piece of wood, as a tiller extension. My fave draught beer is Timothy Taylors Landlord, in cans, Pedigree or Ruddles County*. The problem with most cans is they are 'draught flow'. 'Bottle conditioned' beers are inevitable different from draught or canned as the final fermentation is in the bottle. I may be a philistine but I actually prefer non-draughtflow cans to bottle conditioned beer. Good, well kept, draught is unbeatable though.

I assume by Macky you're referring to Mackeson, can't recall the last time I drank that and I certainly wouldn't have poluted it with Vimto. I couldn't till vimto and mackeson! Though I used to drink pints of purple nasty, which was snakebite with pernod and black in it. For those with sheltered childhoods, snakebite is half lager, half cider. Drink it quick before weird stuff settles. I don't see Mackeson around any more, it was brewed in Hythe, they knocked the building down years ago, nice flats and car park now like just about everything else of interest down here.
Vimto's about isn't it a kids cola drink from before cola was a thing even? Like that 'Bing' which came from the Silver Spring factory, another flattened bit of land awaiting development.
