I'm too light, too short, too old.
The Contender is too heavy, too long and too new to be destroyed on Hythe Beach..
Give me more reasons not to be stupid and buy one anyway.
There's a Contender Open meeting this year at Hythe.
Lot's of Contenders in the South East, quite a few local events, and this would be the fifth in my club.

No just go for it . You will not be happy until you try one. Also it provide hours of entertainment for the 6 of us that are left on here as we read about your ups and downs, the problems with the boat , problems with the class association, problems with the beach , fake news, the py of the boat, the py system, the weight of the boat ,other sailors in the class being younger and better, the rig of the boat , endless hissy fits and finally your decent into total madness 😂😀

Because you’d better suited to Musto .
Now you’re comfortable helm wiring a short responsive boat you’d boss it.
Much as I inappropriately love my Contender at now 70kg & 5’ 3” with a senior railcard. Dealing with it for regular sea sailing would not be fun. Floats too high to reach board from in the water, when inverted impossible to pull up to windward especially if tide is running, do you really fancy learning the San Francisco roll?
I was sailing mine one day in typical northern hill country gusting conditions and friend who has sail both reckoned I’d have had an easier time in Musto.
Offiwind Musto with kite more stable.
So if you’re really going full bore reckless....................?

At least the contender class is big enough worldwide not to be affected by a short old man falling out of love with his inappropriate boat. But why not just buy a really long windsurfer?

You have tried one?

If you want an all round boat to sail and beat your lasers on the water, forget it, in light winds like the Farr the Contender is not a great boat. To much boat in the water, to heavy and flat. You will also be moaning on here about the weight and you wont give it enough time to learn to race it before you get rid and call the boat a pack of crap. You will may well have recked it parking it on the shingle. Don't know how a Musto or 700 gets on in light wind but with your weight it might work.

I've had a Musto, that's what started me off on this merry go round. There's also the lightskiff.de if I needed to be sensible. There were times I enjoyed the Musto and offwind it was never much of a problem, it was just the upwind in over 12knts stuff that gave me problems which I suspect will still be present.
It looks like the one I had my eye on has gone now anyway, rang them yesterday, I didn't really like the colour, it had insipid yellow foils and a yellow key line on the hull, totally wrong it would have been slow.

Didn’t grf start his sailing odyssey with a musto skiff ? Therefore it would bring some sort of synchronicity to his sailing life to finish back in one
Seriously though , it’s better it he scratches his Contender itch now while he still can . You never know he might just love it and if he doesn’t at least the class will have a good second boat come onto the the market.
Not that he will be able to sell it as having ‘ one careful owner ‘
Grf , you beat me to the post

Well I'm going to pursue a twin track approach, I shall keep the Farr37 for when it's above average windy, which is the only time it really comes into it's own and however nice the Contender might be it's unlikely to be as responsive and lively as the Farr, but for light to medium winds it's going to be a Contender if I can get them to agree to a few little mods, like carbon deck RDM rig and higher clew sail..

iGRF - A CONTENDER IS A HEAVY WEATHER BOAT!
If you want something for your weight for force 0 > 3 get an RS700 or RS600 (if you don't want a kite).

grf I can beat a Contender on the water in a Phantom in light wind. I don't even enjoy light wind sailing. The contender is to long and flat aft to be a light wind boat and absolute joy in any breeze.

You can have a higher clew sail already IIRC. Means you lose a bit of sail area though.
I seem to recall one of the top UK guys has/had one?

The Contender has a sail close to 11 sq mtrs, way above my weight threshold, it probably needs it because the damn thing weighs a ton and try as I may I can't get anyone to build one down to a reasonable weight, so it is what it is. The sort of wind the Farr actually gets going in will see me more than overpowered on an 11 mtr, so I see it as the logical thing to do. There may be a couple of wrinkles I can try to make the Contender go, in stupid light weather, but it's true a Phantom can and does give it the runaround, but in that weather it's not that much fun for anyone, but get to marginal 2-3 where the Farr is going nowhere and I'll be off, out on the wire hopefully whilst the lard boys watch my pert little butt some way ahead and getting further, moments to live for, might even have to break out the buttless chaps!

Codswallop. And people say the art of conversation is dead.
Light airs, why not a Musto with a light helm?
By the way iGRF if it's winning line honours you're after a Contender isn't the tool to do it in light; nice and spacious to lie down in for a nap though.

Contender for light winds - a first !
Enjoy following around the Lasers in the light - you will hate it unless you are trapezing

I accept all that, but it's the only other 'class' with more than 3 boats, with mine there will be five and they are all good helms with various strengths and weaknesses that will be fun seeing how far up the wind threshold I can keep up with them.
It's either that or buy a Laser and wait to die.

Much better to have other sailors in the same boat to compare with rather than getting worked up in handicap fleets

I remember a visit to Black Rock YC in Melbourne. All the Contender sailors took their covers off and sunbathed till the breeze got to 15 kts- then they went sailing. Lovely boat

One design, but then grf wants to take it straight out of class, as I read it. Expect any correctors will be removed, too, so not really a Contender any more.

To be fair, very few of us put money where our typing fingers are in the way that grumph does. Usually for very good reason!
Most of us would buy an old Rondar contender to trash on the beach whilst learning, for instance.

Cost of a new Contender, 20k? Cost of a new fat head main sail for your Farr 3.7, and the ability to test it out for the UK Class to consider it for adoption - £600.
No brainer - go for the Contender. Please name it "Codswallop" ;-)

Well, I've put the whole Contender issue on the back burner and have ordered up a new sail for the Farr and am getting it repaired. I read the Contender Class rule book and it totally put me off, paying the best part of 15k for an 82 kilo hull, they physically have to put resin in to make it heavy for f**ks sake. Then there's no on the fly rig adjustments (fore and aft) allowed so you can't trim the mast rake, hence why they suck in light airs and have had to succumb to an electric mountain bike becuase my snowflake chums have all gone for them, so my fun budget is blown for a while.
