Yes I did think about the need for a skilled operator, and the reliability issue, it would need regular testing and maintenance to be 100% sure it would work when it was needed.

Mind you a thrown lifebelt could also give the casualty a fair crack on the bonce and is probably harder to deliver with any accuracy?

I seem to recall that the idea with a thrown ring is that it is thrown past the casualty and they grab the rope. Sounds like a nice idea. Implementation may be a different story!
