My father was an opera singer, which kinda put me off...
Some great new music around, but mostly I'm stuck in the 70s and 80s, everything from Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen to Abba and all the 80s pop. Hated the New Romantics stuff at the time, especially the fashions in induced, but time has obviously affected my ears, as some of it sounds good now. Some nice Stuff there. Tommy particularly significant. My first date with my wife was to go and see the Premier at Lester Square theatre. Possibly the worst film I've ever seen but the Who still a favourite. Quadrophenia still the best concept album for me. Who's Next or Live at Leeds best straight Album. Tooks my eyes off the Music Scene when the kids came along but as that coincided with the punk scene it was no great loss for me. Put together a few sailing videos over the years, purely for my own or club consumption. The soundtracks, while avoiding the more obvious cheesy ones have captured the spirit (I hope). They call me the breeze - JJ Cale Keep on Truckin - Hot Tuna (some members of Jefferson Airplane) Return of the Los Palmas 7 - Madness Hesitation Blues - Hot Tuna (some members from Jefferson Airplane) Boat Weirdos - Joe Walsh Sail on Sailor - Jim Buffet version (OK, that ones a bit cheesy) Plus a few others. |

Madness, brilliant, seem to have got better with time. Peter Frampton, always going to suffer from comparison with school/best friend David Bowie, ironically Bowie was to save Framptons career when he invited him to play lead guitar on his 'Glass spider tour' , only discovered Frampton in the weeks after Bowies death, work colleague sent me a link for 'Glass spider tour', searched for him on youtube and found loads of videos. ------------- Robert |

I was sat outside Cowes in a rescue boat looking after a load of kids in Bosuns. A huge gin palace motored by with loads of girls wearing not very much and someone who looked like Oliver Reed. It was Oliver. They were filming Tommy. |

I love music, I count myself so lucky to have lived through the fifties,sixties,seventies,eighties, nineties, and to a lessor extent the noughties and teens now, although there are some new discoverys, like Sheeran and Seasick Steve, they are as nothing to the impact that Chuck Berry, Beatles, Stones, The Who,The Kinks, Led Zepplin, Bolan, Roxy Music, Bowie,Talking Heads, and so many many more that coloured the background to my life. I've got an awesome collection on the iphone, still got a mono Sgt Pepper. I remember where I was in 1968 the very first time that wonderful new invention stereo meant different sounds came out of either speaker..
Couldn't name favorites, love them all, favorite Opera Carmen, also like Bethoven, Bach, Mozart in small doses at the right time and with the correct spirit bottle close to hand. Also so many memories locked in particular tunes, genres and eras, it doesn't surprise me even dementia patients like a tune.  Highlight of my musical 'career' was playing guitar for the Northern Amateur stage premier of Tommy, the musical. Currently I'm more into acoustic genres, Bluegrass, Folk and, particularly, Gypsy Jazz. Noel went touring with him in the states, down south, said he's never been so fearful of his life, the intense racism they encountered. We never really noticed beyond his incredible talent with a guitar, it was like that in the late sixties and he was God. The white middle classes of the time much prefered their musical icons to at least look caucasian. Hence Elvis getting the title "King of Rock and Roll" when there were a few others with more talent........ Hendrix did break that pattern. Rightly so.

.....aah, memories. in 72,3,4 as teenagers we used to use a coffee bar called the Fiesta, frequented by budding hippies, college goers and young musicians some of whom achieved a level of success. Joe Brand was a regular. The Police used to drop in occasionally, always disappointed though. The juke box was considered to be one of the best in town. Ventura Highway, Horse with no Name, Sandman were often chosen, as was Tumbling Dice, Stay with me, Maggie May, Layla (not a bad track on the LP either), Bell Bottom Blues, Rocket Man, Holiday Inn plus many More. I can almost smell the Patchouli oil and joss sticks. |

Who?.........Great Band Quadrophenia my favourite concept album, Who's next best straight album, Live at Leeds Best live album......Rock at it's best IMO I had a mate who was in with the local bikers. By a remarkable coincidence he was seeing a much older lady called Maggie (and getting a valuable education me thinks)........The dopey sod was always putting Maggie May on the juke box, everyone else got sick to death of it.....Reason to Believe was on the B side I think.
Some songs or LP's were played to death, everyone had a copy, played countless times at parties. In the end I started to so fed up hearing them. Maggie May, Whiter Shade of Pale, Bridge over troubled water LP, Dark Side of the Moon plus a few others After many decades I came back to some of them because the original appeal finally returned. |

I'm a guitar player and got into Django about 15 or so years ago and I try to play his music. I'm not a fan of heavy rock or anything metal but a lot of country flavoured rock, prog, blues, jazz, folk and bluegrass interests me. Pre teens I grew up with The Beatles then got into John Mayall, Cream, Pink Floyd, Hendrix and all that stuff while also playing in folk clubs and listening to John Martyn, Fairport Convention, Tull, The Eagles, Dylan, Richard Thompson and the like. Current fave (mostly obscure and some long gone) bands/players include Bellowhead, String Cheese Incident, Molly Tuttle, The Helecasters and lots of Bluegrass and Gypsy Jazz players. Lots more too but if I don't stop I'll go on all night  .

Gilmour comes across as a tough guy, not saying that in a derogatory way, someone who can look after himself physically and mentally, don't think he would have been amused if a producer suggested a lilac jacket with a frilly shirt, his commanding presence was enough dressing.
Eric? Eric Clapton? Another tough guy. Not sure who Greeny is? Mick Jagger, can't see how he could have been anything other than the camp performer, he isn't without substance though. Edited to change wasn't to isn't, he's not dead. ------------- Robert |

I'm not sure Clapton was tough, he comes across as pretty vulnerable to me, Gilmour similar (though maybe a bit more grounded). Greeny... Peter Green, great player but not an overt showman. I've never been attracted to the showmanship side of it, that's not to say I don't like some of those who do the whole stage show thing (Genisis, Queen, Floyd et. al.) but it has never been a deciding factor, the music is what matters. That said all the strutting and posturing* does detract from the music for me and I'd rather watch Clapton than Kiss...

Never been struck by Clapton, one hit wonder, where would he be now without Layla? Good background guitarist? Last year only music I purchased was The Killers and Cold Play. Being an old fart I tend to look back on the 60's and 70's. We had kids coming along in the late 70's and everything later passed me by, sadly no time to appreciate. The music industry had changed anyway so I figured I hadn't missed much. Looking back there were a few gems though. Many of the artists from 80's, 90's and later no doubt had some talent but it was increasingly more often squashed by the industry, record labels or managers who wanted something that fit the mood or fashion of the day. I guess commercial pressures have always figured but I think it became more common place later on.....Good song writing with the end product made shallow by commercial pressures.
