Here’s some membership stats for the Facebook classified group myself and 3 other forum members manage....nearly 25,000 members now, so a fairly good representation of the facebook engaging UK dinghy scene:

Interesting - I do wonder if the 55 and up groups are affected by a lower level of on-line / FB usage as I would have expected to see that older cohort more represented.

I guess if FB lives that long, we shall see the bubble getting older, just as with actual sailing

This would be my assumption too.  I was however pleasantly surprised by the gender demographic.... especially given the tendendency for blokes to be a bit more into kit whorish behaviour when it comes to buying sh*t for their activities.

BTW - have to ask what is "Custom" when it comes to gender?

There is a setting in Facebook to decline your gender I guess... anyway, let’s not get iGRF started on those who don’t subscribe to polarised views of sexuality and gender.... there’s a Hamlet quote about protesting, and it doesn’t involve little red flags.

OH ok that makes sense - was just a weird way for FB to refer to someone who had opted for anything by M or F!!

Can't imagine many lie about those things, I mean why bother? OTOH using my real name online is a different matter.....

I’d expect the opposite. Facebook is for oldies, yoof are all on Instagram.

I don’t remember telling Facebook my age or gender?

You have to give a DOB to sign up, hence those annoying reminders that some bloke you possibly went to school with who friend requested you back in 2007 is now Turing 40. not sure on Gender for new sign up... it’s probably therr

Because intrusive questions designed to target advertising deserve to be treated with contempt.

Don't give your date of birth to anyone who doesn't really need it, it is one of the pieces of information that aid identity theft.

I am a GDPR IT Project Manager. If a company does not have a valid reason for requesting your DoB, then they could be in breach of the regulations. Unfortunately, in this case, it's FB, so age related marketing would potentially apply, so not in breach. However, worth noting if other companies request your DoB

Facebook has an age policy - I think minimum age is 14.

There are likely to be vast swathes of millennials on there who signed up at 11 and made themselves a few years older.

Less likely to happen for Generation Z - or certainly the younger end of it.... they typically think facebook is lame and for Granparents

I had this exact argument with a train conductor when filling out a form when I forgot my season ticket. I refused to give my dob as it was not relevant, they only needed to know I was over 18 as opposed to needing a child ticket.
