Is there an official definition, or more specifically, an official limitation on running by the lee.
Last weekend while getting across into a wind streak I was well up into broad reach territory.
It reminded me of messing around in lasers as a youth. By converting the mainsheet to a single purchase there was enough scope to bring the boom well forwards and sail to windward "by the lee"
Not the quickest, but being on starboard while on a port close hauled course could be useful.

No definition AFIK and no specific limitations. Proper course stuff will presumably apply as will room to keep clear where relevant.

So, in practice, if the sail is filling from behind (i.e. not backwinded) the leeward side is the side the boom is on. If the sail fills from the 'wrong' side the boat is no longer sailing by the lee and her windward side is that over witch the wind is blowing.

I am surprised that there has not been more deliberation. Those judges were more concerned with deliberatly pulling the boom to windward to claim starboard. Maybe if there was serious laser team racing it would have been explored more.
I didnt see anything in their discussion to stop me continuing to ?bear away ?luff up from my running by the lee to go as near to the wind as I can go

You can certainly get a Lightning on a reach with the sail out over the bow. It's good fun. But there is a tendency for the boat to spin out with no notice. Think this would get you into trouble in a race!

The rule is pretty sensible. It would be ridiculous if the ROW changed second by second in a shifty breeze.
It's always possible to think up highly unlikely hypothetical situations that make the rule look odd, but they are usually very unlikely in practice. The rules would be impossible if they tried to allow for every conceivable possibility.
