We currently sail in North Yorkshire and are moving to North Hampshire. My daughter is 13 and sails an Optimist, was in Zone Squad this year and hopping to do the same this year, in the future she will move to Topper or Laser 4.7. I sail a Streaker. At our current club the Youth, Juniors and adults race together, general handicap, on a Sunday, upto four races, racing also on Wednesday nights. There is casual sailing Saturday and Friday in the summer. We have monthly Youth and Junior Saturdays and a summer sail camp. When I look at south coast clubs, looking in the Solent area, dinghy racing is on strange week days Monday night, Thursday nights and Sunday mornings in the summer. Can anyone recommend a good club in the Solent area and possibly a bit further east along the coast that has good weekend dinghy sailing. HISC is great for the youths and juniors. There are lots of sailors there and the club do youth racing and also have youth coaching over the winter. There is lots of Oppy sailing throughout the year. There is not a lot of lasers, but lots of solos, who she would race against in a handicap fleet. Brenda Hoult has a solo and streaker and sails both at a high level. During the summer there is youth training week and youth race week, which is a lot of fun! |

I'll declare a bias here, but there is a lot of youth activity at HISC, in Oppies, Teras, Tera Pros and Fevas - coaching and both formal and informal racing. No Topper activity that I'm aware of. Thanks Nick, I can see that there is plenty of great youth stuff going on but I cannot see where 14 year old plus are progressing after after that. At my current club we do the Y&J stuff but then the kids race alongside the adults on the Sunday, it is a whole day and whole family day. I had thought Warsash would be where we would end up but it doesn’t appear to replicate what we have This is from their website ‘Dinghy racing takes place regularly on Wednesday and Friday evenings from April until September. From my experience there are active clubs at Keyhaven, Lymington, Warsash, Stokes Bay, Hayling Island and Itchenor all of which will offer decent racing ------------- H2 #115 (sold) H2 145 OK 2082 |

Thanks from a quick look Stokes bay, not looked at them, looks promising can’t see all their results but calendar looks promising Lymington town ‘For dinghies, Club racing events and series take place on Sunday mornings (all the year round), and on Wednesdays (between April and November). Club members are also welcome to join the RLymYC Monday evening dinghy racing.’ Royal Lymington - Dinghies Monday night? Lots of the youths at Hayling move into double handers and go down the route of Oppy - Feva - 29er and the RS200 or RS800. The 29ers do the National circuit and their own training at the weekends. The RS200 is always popular and the sprint racing is especially hotly contested. The optimist class is a funny one, it goes in cycles at HISC and some sailors do the full circuit and others club race. Rachael who is class captain took over this year and is very keen, so I am certain that next year will see a surge in numbers. |

Probably worth personally visiting some of these clubs rather than judge by websites and series results. I believe that Lymington has quite a strong Oppy scene; and I think (but stand to be corrected) that there is some reciprocal arrangement between the Lymington Clubs. But Hayling and Lymington can be a bit of a nightmare to travel too and from on a hot weekend. Or how about looking at some of the good inland clubs around you ... Frensham, Spinnaker and Burfield might be within easier reach, and compliment this with visiting the South Coast clubs for opens etc? ------------- Happily living in the past |

Getting AWAY from HISC after sailing can be a bore sometimes on a sunny summer day, but getting to the club for a Sunday 11am start means we're ahead of the beachgoers. ------------- Nick D-Zero 316 |

By chance I have bought my daughter's Oppie and her Topper from Warsash. They seem to have a great fleet of both and have a lot of activities for the kids with many doing the local zones.
I wouldn't rule out Burghfield and Frensham either just because they aren't on salt water. ------------- OK 2129 RS200 411 |

Thanks craiggo, We are at Weymouth Optimist event this weekend and will try and hook up with some Warsash and Burghfield. There are lots of clubs doing great work with Youth and Juniors in the area but limited ones where the kids and the adults all sail multiple races on the same day. Up here sailing is a family sport with multiple families with parents racing their boats and the kids doing the same in the same races for usually 3 or 4 races a day. ------------- Tink https://tinkboats.com http://proasail.blogspot.com |
