| I sail a Byte C1 And am looking at a Comet xtra for my Wed night boat at my second club. I weigh 51 kilos. Little experience of dinghys. Would get another byte but still expensive for a second boat. Any observations on the suitability of this boat. Is it really well suited to a lighter adult or will I be overpowered in a blow? |

Their are 8 small comets at my club, zeros, these are available in different rigs, the xtra is supposed to be the fastest but they all use same PY, nice boats, just a bit tippy.
We have a 6'6" male member sail a zero, looks a bit odd, but he likes it, only uses it when his crew doesn't turn up, normally sails a GP 14 |

The Xtra and the original Comet are the same boat but with a different rig. On the circuit they sail together, but I'm 10 years out of date, so no idea which is now more popular. The hull shape is tippy in a blow, but it isn't overpowered, so light weight won't be an issue. ------------- Firefly 2324, Puffin 229, Minisail 3446 Mirror 70686 |

| Judging by the comets sailed at my club. The original Comet is better for heavier sailors and slightly better in light wind . The Xtra rig is better for lighter sailors and transforms the boat for better in windy conditions . My wife has just picked one as a second boat , it’s old but in good condition and very cheap. Loves it . |

| Thank you all for your help. My key questions answered. But I am now questioning the wisdom of owning 2 boats which are different. Additionally how I can keep my commitment to duty at 2 Clubs and 3 months abroad each year. |

| I wonder if there is a racing dinghy which is light enough for smaller adults to manage that is not tippy but is fast enough to compete in mixed fleets. |

How un-tippy? The Lightning ticks the boxes, especially with the small rig, assuming getting wet isn't a total no-no, a yardstick in the high 1100s isn't too slow for the rest of the fleet, and light is over 50kg. ------------- Firefly 2324, Puffin 229, Minisail 3446 Mirror 70686 |

I assume your two clubs are home and UK holiday clubs (like mine)? I'm questioning the wisdom of owning two identical boats  . The Blaze is great on the sea but less than optimal inland but sailing two different classes means learning two different sets of skills which didn't work for me with the Supernova. Fast or slow is a mixed blessing, the Blaze is fast as singlehanders go but that just means you can win by a margin over the water and still end up mid fleet or worse on handicap (in a typical 45 minute race I need to finish nearly 5 mins ahead of a Solo to beat him on handicap). If your club uses an average lap scoring system a slow boat doesn't mean taking much longer to finish than faster boats. Well, according to the current PN list (which lists 32 single sail, singlehanded boats), the only una-rig singlehanders that are faster are the Phantom, 300, Aero 9, Contender and Vortex (which is a cat in disguise so doesn't really count). ------------- Spice 346 "Flat Broke" Blaze 671 "supersonic soap dish" |
