I’ve been offered a trailer tent for peanuts and I’m thinking it would work well for taking the boy round the Topper circuit, with the boat on the car roof.
It has built in cooking facilities which makes it a much better proposition than a tent, and is considerably cheaper than a motorhome, so I’m thinking it could work well as a way of staying onsite at events. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen anyone do this though, which has got me thinking whether clubs would allow such a thing - some clubs do not allow caravans, but not sure if this would be classed as one – to my mind it is a tent so should be OK. Has anyone else tried this or seen this? ------------- RS600 1001 |

I thought seriously about trailer tents in my campaigning days, modifying one to put the boat and trolley on the trailer tent roof. What put me off, though, was that they all seemed so frigging complicated, unfolding into a vast emporium about five times the size of the actual trailer, when all I wanted was to lift up a roof and go to sleep.
So I'd investigate how long it takes to rig the thing before making decisions. I would certainly assume that any venue that bans caravans will ban trailer tents. |

It doesn't seem hugely complicated to put up, no worse than a tent really, just unfolds like a pram roof, legs down, pegs in.
It may well come down to whether it is treated as a caravan but to be fair, if it saves the cost of just two or three B&B's it will have paid for itself ------------- RS600 1001 |

| Why not get a roof box tent? Looks like a wide roof box but when you pop it up its a decent sized double bed big enough for two adults. This way you have no issues as its just a car that is parked in the car park until everyone has gone and you go off for something to eat then pop it up and go to sleep! They are quite expensive but you can pick them up used on eBay etc |

I used to have a Pennine Pullman, this was very easy to erect, taking no more than 15 minutes, no pegging unless you put up awning that they come with. I had an 8x4 foot sheet of ply placed on top, I fitted lashing rings to this, board was then lashed to camper, I carried bikes and kayaks on this setup, no boat though, but would have easily taken something the size of a Laser. camper had hot and cold water, a fridge etc, 2 bedrooms projected over ends.

It's only a few years back that I was tearing the arse out of the car on the Topper trail. Being a tight wad I/we 'stealth camped' ie. hid the lads pup tent in the boatpark while I dossed in the 'otel Peugeot. However I'm not sure we could have got away with anything much bigger. Some venues might force you onto official campsites, then you have to balance the costs of: camping fees+extra fuel+extra maintenance&hastle+home storage VS Travel lodge On a practical note I'm sure I remember someone fitting roofbars to a trailer tent for the Topper so the whole thing went straight into storage when they got home at 1:00AM Monday morning. Ahhh, those were the days. |

Liking the idea of stealth camping - and it's easier to beg forgiveness than gain permission....
With roof bars on top for the boat and any tell-tale decals removed it might actually pass for a normal box trailer that some of the squaddie types use for all their spares etc, wait for it to get dark then flip up the roof. A few customers have fitted these onto the top deck of standard mersea double stack trailers http://www.autohome-official.com boat underneath, gear in car, sail, have some beers and go to sleep. Night time comfort breaks would be amusing. Sorry? What is a comfort break? Just lean out and piss all over your door handles  I'd be more worried that someone nicks your ladder.....
But to be more serious if you are going to use one of these things why don't you just use a tent bought for £40, rather than £1500. After all I don't remember seeing many bears or the like sniffing around any sailing clubs. ------------- Everything I say is my opinion, honest |

| Camper vans and tents seem to be welcome at most open events these days so you ought to be OK. Town clubs are the main problem since they don't have the space but I joined a caravan/camping club just to access the certificated locations network - cheaper 5 van sites on farms etc. |
