How much worse would it be? All usual rights apply. Given how difficult it is to judge in the moment and later when debating rights or wrongs. |

The 'usual' rights include the entitlement to 'continuing' mark-room for a boat clear ahead or overlapped inside at the zone under rules 18.2( b ) and ( c ). The effect of the zone and these rules is to 'freeze' the entitlements of boats from when they enter the zone, preventing rights and entitlements from flip-flopping between boats, while they are converging around a mark and at greatest risk, and have a lot of things to do and consider in a short time. Change the rules and you change the game. In this case, I think you would be changing the game into open mud-wrestling at each mark-rounding.

So I assume you're proposing a return to the pre-zone situation, like the 1939 YRA rules, or the 1944 Vanderbilt Rules, or 1968 IYRU rules, rather than scrapping the concept of mark room altogether (and just saying "tough" to inside, keep clear boats)? AFAICS, the only result is arguments about when the equivalent of 18 starts applying, and what the meaning of "about" is, and without an equivalent of 18.2.e, no easy way of resolving disputes. YRA. I think one of the most important aspects of the zone is that it gives the boat that must give room time to react and actually give the space. If you don't have a zone then inside must attempt to react whenever a boat gets an overlap, even if its last second. The potential difficulties are highlighted in the missed the mark, tacking in the zone thread.
Presuming, thanks for the demo of how much better the rules were(n't) in the 'good' old days:-) |

| Think about a big-fleet port hand leeward mark rounding without rule 18. Everybody would be making a starboard tack reaching approach with the gybe shortly past the mark. Come in on port or running and you have no rights at all. Back markers on starboard could prevent those in front from gybing. It would be chaotic. |
