Hi all,
I have two quick 49er newbie questions.Firstly, is there an accepted technique to right the boat after a capsize? Secondly, is it possible and/or advisable to drop the main and sail under jib alone? I need to navigate a busy harbour to land on a narrow slip.

Hi
I know the guys at Lee drop the main before coming in and it does reduce the chance of trashing the boat on the slip.
Good luck once they look a blast once you get through the learning curve.

From bitter experience in an RS800, if you should capsize with the main down, I suspect it will turtle instantly.
Not good in shallow water.

Thanks for that. Any advice on righting after a capsize? I'm used to being able to climb up between the rack and the hull on my 600 - these wing things take some getting used to.

Capsize recovery is straight forward. Both crew on the board, as the boat comes upright crew steps over gunwale in front of the wing and in front of the mast and can then balance the boat. If he is quick enough the helm can also step over behind the crew. The alternative is that the helm goes first and the crew stays on the board and holds the gunwale. Once the boat is upright and the helm is sorted in the boat, the crew rolls over the wing.
I used to sail mine from a narrow concrete lee shore slipway. Taking the main down on the water is tricky as it's easy to catch it on the kicker lever arms and rip it, but I did drop the main on the water more than once. It's also tricky to roll it all up and secure it without stepping on it and further damaging it on the non-slip.
Remember the rudder is pretty small. I developed a technique of coming in pretty hot with the cb up as far as it would go without catching the foot of the main and then luffing up at the last minute with crew jumping out in front of the wing and me jumping off the back in knee deep water. Takes a bit of confidence though!
