In another thread people talk about joining fees putting people off joining a club. I also have looked round the compound to look at how active the club is.
Does it put you off as well if there are to many knacked boats with no covers, trollys that have not moved for years etc?
I want to raise this at our AGM about getting rid of the boats/ members that have only been moved by work parties to cut the grass we could do this by making them do a bouyancy test. So I want feedback about wether I am the only one that gets put off by these boats.
I also think they make the club look uninviting to people who might want to give sailing a go.

when the AGM.... you've only got until 5th November to find the perfect solution.
Agree 100% by the way - it's a first impressions thing for visitors.

We have a rule that all boats must be moved out of the Boatpark for January and February, when we don't sail. We also have an attendance list that factors in duties and working parties, since the Boatpark spaces are limited.

It doesn't put me off TBH, it's inevitable that there are some boats that get neglected or forgotten, if the member is paying his subs.........
If not, OTOH, I'm trying to trace the owner of an abandoned boat with a view to buying, restoring and then racing it at the club in question. Clubs can sell abandoned boats to defray 'storage charger' or WHY incurred by an ex-member but the effort involved is considerable and it's a legal minefield (I was a chairman of a windsurfing club for a number of years and we investigated the subject thoroughly) so many deduce it's simpler to ignore them or push them to the back of the boat park.

Its probably sensible to have something in the club rules covering abandoned boats/unpaid berthing fees. I wouldn't be surprised if the RYA could offer advice on the subject.

at our place you have to use your boat 8 times in the year or you lose your dinghy park space.

What I look at when thinking about joining a club is boats racing. Results on the net. I don't much care how shiny the boats that don't go out are.

It is still a bit of a minefield. You need to prove you got the best price possible along with a receipt so if the former owner does rear their head you can present them with said receipt and a cheque/cash for the correct amount.

I'd like to see a legal opinion for that. Best price reasonably obtainable seems much more likely.
And of course the club will be able to deduct all expenses and outstanding fees due to the club before returning anything left. This is a very common situation (housing tenants etc), it shouldn't present serious problems provided the terms in the rules don't constitute an unfair contract..

I believe the RYA can advise. Such boats appear on ebay from time to time.

vain hope of there being any surplus, in many cases the original owners of abandoned boats would still owe membership + water fee + boatpark fee s well in excess of the price it made...
demonstrating best value - sealed bids is more than adequate

It is, as had been mentioned, a bit of a minefield.

In our case the boats are all paid for but just left in a total mess and frankly a risk to other boats in the compound due to dodgy rigging etc.
We have other the last few years got rid of the non payers by selling or bonfire in a couple of cases. One GRP Ent is still causinga problem as I dont think anyone will want that and we cant burn it.
If you do want it let me know its yours!

Chainsaw and a trip to the dump will soon sort a GRP Ent!

Not at all sure about a chain saw. A reciprocating saw would be my choice. A much lower risk option.

Fill it up with empty beer bottles and other ocean detritus..... maybe some 6-pack rings around a plastic seagull's throat.
Then flog it on eBay in the modern sculpture / environmental art section.

Largish GRP boats will burn, just put a wooden boat inside, if possible top off with a smaller wooden boat, similar to a "3 bird roast"

Not sure I want to be downwind of the resulting 'viking funeral' though

And after you've burnt the resin off, you've still got the glass to deal with.

The best means of disposal is to donate them to some poor sucker as a flower planter. Failing that realistically all you can do is to chop them up in reasonable size pieces and take them to landfill. If you set fire to them the resulting fibres would be a pretty nasty health hazard, and the combustion products aren't wonderful either.

How is it that boats get to stay so long in a park, do the fees get paid and if not how do things go on so long? Is it that there is little demand for space at a club and so little pressure on the club to clear out the dross, adding to the fact the fees are paid. Or does the storage go on all year round so no clear out and reapplication needed which gives a club a chance to assess the applicants for said spaces. We share the yard space with the big boats, summer for the small dinghies and winter for the big stuff, everyone in the club gets a turn when their need is greatest.

Some clubs are dinghies only and can store hundreds of boats so keep up with those types of dinghy parks is a big job.

Why chuck them out of they are paying their fees and you don't have a waiting list? Keep them there helping keep the fees down for the active members. Only an issue once you need the space or the member leaves and doesn't take the boat. We have this every now and again and the ex member is given plenty of warning before it gets chopped up

The legal situation regarding disposal of abandoned boats is pretty complex, basically the club has to show that they have made reasonable efforts to contact the owner, (two recorded letters) then demonstrate that they have achieved the best price if the boat is saleable and prior to all of they they have to have a clause in the rules stating that boats may be sold or disposed of after a certain time to defray unpaid subs. It's a lot of effort for the club's committee and if, after the boat has beed disposed of the owns pops up demanding he's boat back there is a possibility of court action and more time and effort for the committee. It's not surprising that most clubs just don't want to get involved.

at Blithfield we have an agreed structure to contact expired owners asking them to remove boats/pay outstanding fees. This is only applied to bosts which have obviously been abandoned. After all efforts have been made, a listing on ebay with low starting price avoids the extra work of burning/cutting. even the worst boat can have a new life as a planter or kids sandpit!

We have similar. Structure is clear in the club rules. Maybe we should see the joining fee as a "just in case fee" for people who abandon boats when they leave, to join two threads together!

I think you need personal handicaps too..... and maybe they need to earn a 10 - 20 PY advantage for every duty they do??
