Sounds like they hit one of the enormous barrel jellyfish that are/were off the beach. Actually surprised the didn't make it in to the race reports for the event as they seemed to be the talk of the bar when everyone came in. |

| A few years ago we had an RS 300 open at Combs which was great fun on a lovely day. I wrote a race report but the fleet split into two very clear halves. My report featured the leaders as someone very close to me won but a friend who was in the other half of the fleet wrote a report for that race. We put both out together which was a great success and covered all the excitement. |

This week I have friends sailing in the Firefly Nationals, as well as other friends competing in the Javelin Europeans. Every day reports are posted on here of the Fireflies and very good they are, but they are tack by tack accounts of the top few boats and there are no daily overall results. My friends are obviously placed somewhere between 6 and 40! Unless they spent the week in the pub of course, I have no idea. I think that these reports are like a local paper, you only buy it to see pictures of your kids in the nativity play. Not many boats in the Javelins but I get nightly reports by text anyway.

So what's changed in 30 years then? I only ever bought Y&Y to read the clubs and classes bits of the classes I was interested in. And to dream big drooling over the classified ads. I thought everyone read Y&Y back to front? Thesedays I only click on the reports for classes I'm interested in, or feel peer-pressured into reading through backdoor links off this forum.... your Byte report being a prime example

I am new to this instagram thing, an instagram virgin you may say. Quite a few teenage girl sailors seem to 'like' our pictures and some of their photographs seem to be of them doing beachy things with their friends. I have been told that I should 'like' or even 'follow' them back, but I have no wish to share a cell with Mr. Glitter or Rolf, so I do not. |

Can people stop using "Snakes and Ladders" in race reports, I'm reading about 2 or 3 a week now with this most irritating phrase in. Many thanks. Disgruntled.

I agree.... but also.... I wish they'd stop using "Champagne Sailing" - it means so many different things to so many people and it's repeated use in report after report just shows a lack of imagination...... rant rant rant over. |

Mmm, but cliches become cliches because they communicate well with people. Maybe a talented writer can come up with a different phrase, but its a pretty evocative shortcut for variable conditions in which it was easy to gain or lose a lot of ground quickly...
Anyway I'm sure we all have our own stylistic quirks. I'm very prone to starting paragraphs with adverbs, particularly ones starting in a, and most especially anyway. If I'm not careful I'll see half the paragraphs in a report starting with it... |

| I would not use 'Champagne sailing' because it is over used but what an evocative phrase it is? Bubbles, spray and sunshine. It's like 'leaden skies', we all know what that means or 'crashing waves'. I think I may try, 'the sails crackled like cooking bacon' or 'the spinnaker billowed like the breasts of a beautiful woman'. |

It's never 'Stella Artois' sailing is it.... But that would be more appropriate :
Verbal, emotional and sometimes physical abuse of the 'sailing spouse' Feels good at the time, but hurts in the morning In those susceptible, it can result in out of character acts of minor cheating and rule infrigement. |

OK- got a new one for you.... 'inaugural'... I'm sick of that word in article titles and event descriptions. I fear the only solution is to stop reading reports about new classes that may or may not make it past 3 or 4 of these blessed events.
