Searched the above title in the forum and on Google and the only answers I got were to use contact adhesive.

What do people recommend as a glue that works (i.e. specific product). Looking at the remains of the glue on my boat it looks a lot like sealant (something like Sikaflex 291), which I know sticks very well and the gasket has stayed on for 8 years, which seems pretty good by the accounts on here.

Hi Stretch
RS do a two part adhesive, or I have used dunlop fixafix before.
Geeting the old glue off and then getting a key is esential.
Allow more time than you think.
Cheers

There is an excellent document by Mike McNamara which has been recommended a number of times on the Merlin Rocket forum.

The link is

He uses double sided tape.

Double sided tape? That sounds like an idea I'm just doing this, went to the chandlery and got the choice of Thixofix which is a known crap '80's impact adhesive which can be very hit and miss and two tubes side by side that the assistant assured me you just squeeze together on your flushing strip (shows how many he's ever fitted) epoxy adhesive which I have to say i also have my doubts about.
Last time i used the 'No nails' waterproof builders stuff, which worked a treat but is horribly grungy to look at and the very devil to remove afterwards, it's taken me literally ages to prepare the surface this go round I want to be sure to get it right.
Think I'll read what merlin man has written, find out about the double tape there are some very good 3M adhesives on tape, they get used to fix footpaths on kite & windsurfing boards all the time.

I should also as a footnote point out the RS Adhesive is the best I've used to date prior to the no nails experiment, but it comes as part of a kit when you buy flushers for one of their boats, not sure (haven't tried) it can be ordered separately.

I used the RS stuff (Hypa Bond) and it can be ordered separately (but out of stock currently, as per website)

Double sided is only used where you have a metallic keel-band secured over the top of the gasket.

Yep I spotted that on the wayfarer, but... There have been some big strides forward in adhesives, they get used in the outdoor sign industry and all sorts of applications, I found one that would do the job, but not worth mentioning here in this world of the impecunious. £59 for a role of double sided tape is enough to make even a big spending windsurfers eyes water.

Hi Lurch
If its for your Phantom, when you have stuck the slot gasket back on, get some mylar tape and tape over the edge of the gasket onto the hull. This should give you about 40mm of mylar tape on the hull but stop water trolly etc getting under the edge of the gasket.
Cheers

One part contact adhesive is rubbish. Two part is much, much better.

Sikkaflex (Or PU based adhesive of your choice - most motor factors do one that will be cheaper) is better still and if done properly will not come off. It's messy so mask out the area around the gasket edge with tape and newspaper and keep some acetone handy to clean up. Be generous with the glue and really force it out when you apply the mylar gasket.

If the gasket is done in one piece score the cut line off the boat then finish it afterwards. Doing the full cut before assembly makes life difficult.

I have some slot gasket tape made by Hawk which is surplus to requirements. PM me if you are interested.

Sorry Buzz, just seen your message, but have already bought the tape and tried to attach it.

That Thixofix stuff is absolutely rubbish. I have no confidence that it will stay on for any length of time at all. Should have gone with Sikaflex which is what I suspect was on it for the first 8 years....
