I have a nice carbon tube to use as my tiller extension. What should I make the non slip grip at the end from ?
I have been suggested to use self amalgamating tape.
What about the cold shrink tubes or heat shrink even ?
An extension I had before had a nice pro grip type cover; where can I get hold of one of those to slip on ?
Any other suggestions ?

I wouldn't put heat shrink on. You may find something like a gold club handle might work or just put a big stopper on the end Rooster style.

It depends on the current finish of the tube really, you may find you dont need any additional grip.

What I have seen down which works well is to use thin rope (1-2mm) to wind a very very open spiral along the tube where you need to grip it. Then cover in heat shrink to hold rope in place. Heat shrink can be got cheaply from Maplin Electronics.

Also seen bike handlebar covering used but this does not wear as well.

I've seen that done with insulation take over the string too. You'll have to wrap it tightly though otherwise it'll come off

This probably depends on the tube, but in my view leaving it bare is best. Whereas I always struggled looking for the perfect non slip when I had an alloy extension on my Contender, I found the carbon one had an almost perfect compromise of stick and slip. Too non stick and you it won't slip easily through your hand when you are moving out. Unfortunately, not all carbon tubes have the same finish, and I no longer have the Contender, and can't remember who made the stick. I find the Fatso extension on my Laser also works very well nude, but again that has a rougher finish than some others.

So, if you haven't used it already my advice is try it before you start sticking stuff on it.

As said, too grippy can feel really awkward.

I wouldn't bother putting special grip on the end section, maybe just the lightest ball you can find, bonus of a light sealed tube is that you stand a chance of recovering it if the joint fails in extremis and you drop it over the side.

I have come to like moderate uniform grip over the whole length, if the tube as made is too slippy I would try epoxing an open spiral of cloth tape/ribbon up it. It really doesn't need a lot to give enough grip, how hard are you pulling it anyway?

I now have C2 Nite Stick extensions on both my boats (Contender & Hiking helm) and couldn't wish for better.

put a turks head knot on the end, then you have a 'stop' which lets you know you only have an inch left.....
works for me Smile on my Ronstan battlesticks.

Just tape a plastic ball on the end...not too big though or it will not fit in your mouth in extremis.

I agree with many of the others.... carbon won't need too much extra grip, but a band of tape (thick enough to feel it) about 2 inches from the end will remind you that you're running out of length (oooh-errr Missus).
Sorry if this sounds like a egg-sucking lesson, but if you're needing extra grip because you're hauling like hell on the tiller, then I'd suggest you either adjust your rig forward a bit (or apply more Cunningham), or you need to sail the boat flatter.
