How would that effect us at grass roots level?
How would it effect the RYA?
The yardstick thread has turned into a bit of RYA navel gazing, but really would it be such a bad thing, would things return to a better situation for us all at club level, or would the potential pot of Olympic Gold at the end of the squaddie rainbow kill us from the bottom up, with lack of youth influx?
My personal opinion is that the route to club success is adult involvement and whilst I accept that a degree of parental adoption may occur it's not something I've personally ever witnessed at either of my clubs. It usually works from the top down sailing father mother to son daughter.
This I also believe is an RYA failing, too much time and money spent on kids then the ruthless casting of them into the wilderness if they don't come up to scratch within the prescribed timeline.
What's your view?

Children become parents eventually - maybe you have to atart the generational process somewhere?
Would Olympic deselection affect the sailing done at clubs? Yes, I think it would, slowly. Every 4 years the spotlight is shone on sports that rarely get other coverage (and in sailing's case, the only others tend to be disasters or the AC - both poor examples for attracting people to dinghies) and even if only a few actually get caught up in sailing, they are a few we would no longer have.
I also don't think we would see an increase in funding at grass roots - quite the opposite, in fact.

Superficially and in the short term nothing much would change about the UK club scene.
But being Britains most successful Olympic sort has got to be a big help for clubs trying to get co-operation from local authorties, companies and the like. That's even more strongly the case overseas.
In the long term I think a whole bunch of stuff would get more difficult. Non Olympic sports have an awful lot more trouble getting sports council grants and the like for facilities.
