So, if you had a stocking big enough, what boat would you like Santa to fill it with?
I'll kick off with an International 12.

Predictably I would like a brand new Merlin Rocket to name plus (probably as importantly) a new body replacement so that I could sail her to the max.
If only those scientists would get on with producing whole body replacements rather than piffling about with the bits!!

The new 45 kilo all up Fire Blaze, that one with the kite option he's been promising for years and can I have it with the 1071 yardstick when it's in single rig mode and 1030 with the kite?
Better still I'd like a manufacturers 'build any boat you give us drawings of' gift token, I'm stalled trying to make my mind up which wood to buy and where to get it from and I can't stop myself from constantly changing the plans.

Santa and the epoxy elves are working hard on another project at the moment but they really have not forgotten the missives 'you' keep sending to the 'North Pole'.... He's already done a bit of preliminary work on it.
Even Santa however cannot 'fix' the handicaps as you should already know. You might have to sit on an old mans knee somewhere else for that one - I'd try asking nicely first maybe.

PS - Greame - I'm sure we said it was going to be with the 11.5m Halo rig though ?

It would have to be a 505 as I already have a virtually new Phantom the perfect answer for single handed sailing.
Plus being younger and fitter than I am now to make it worthwhile.

Not so much the boat I need as the body back on song to operate it properly.
But given the ability to sail it reasonably I'll have a Maas design Canoe from Bloodaxe with a whole heap of reduced Aero drag deck design tweaks I have in mind.

Its a difficult decision if I'm only allowed one new boat in my christmas stocking, but I think I'd go for the grey Idol OK from this years Dinghy show.
Failing that I'll take a Boatyard at Beer Graduate (until next year, then I'll ask for a Tim Harper Graduate).

505, who wouldn't? A classic though, that monster kite could be more hinderance than help for Club racing.
Bonezzi Contender, a thing of beauty for sure.
Both truly objects of desire but thinking about it, having fitted out my double hander from a bare hull it looks set to be my lifetime boat and the ratty Contender fills it's role nicely.
I reckon my perfect gift from Santa would be a Blaze Fire.

You want a hot moulded one, not cold - the Fairey ones are far less likely to rot.
So far, that is the simplest one for Santa to bring, I'd say - lots around just a few hundred quid. Ideal for a small lake, too.

I got in early, a few weeks ago, with a Miracle 20 - Hobie's copy of the Hurricane 5.9. Although we're not particularly heavy, our old cat (Taipan 4.9 F16 type) struggled under us in the chop of our old sailing grounds. The Miracle is 4' longer, very similar in age, identical in power to weight ratio, but gets away with a very similar yardstick. We may now have another yardstick bandit to go with our two boats that get robbed. It seems to go like a streak and suits my style a lot better; three races against faster boats so far for three fastest times. Not bad for a boat that cost less than four times the price of a Laser sail, on a good trailer.
Oh, and we capsized four times in our first three sails but never in a race so far, luckily! And I learned that when you get a big new cat, you should check that it has righting lines rigged before you capsize close to the lee shore!

Laser sails are fairly cheap down here but real estate is expensive. T he trampoline is leased out to backpackers and each of the hulls now houses a family of Brits who moved south for the sunshine and jobs, so we've still done OK out of the deal.

Having spent all day yesterday moving boats and reorganising the front garden/yard and bringing home boats from the club for the end of season dinghy park clear out, I do NOT want another boat.
There will be 14 in our yard (not quite all ours) by Christmas plus a couple of Zodiac inflatables so I'd like Santa to bring us some house elves to complete the triple stacker Merlin shed we're building and to renovate lots of boats since we've got too many projects and I can't afford to pay Chris.

Choices, choices. My heart says a 300 or a 100, my head says a phantom. None of whicb would need to be newer, just newer than my current boat.
Failing that I'd take new supersofa with a constant f3-4 wind all year long.

Dear Santa
I would like a modern two person boat, two sailed boat, that will carry two normal sized adults, sit in PY range of approx 1100 to 1070, definitely no spinnaker, sail well in a range of conditions from drifter to blow, point high, plane fast, tack well, relatively stable platform that self drains (or not punish me harshly with a wet puddle every time I cock up my roll tacks!, relatively comfortable with a bit of boom height and easy to move around off the water.
If sent the following will be returned after Xmas. N12. (not suitable for normal sized adults) Enterprise (a bit last century...but I might hang on to a Rondar one if you are feeling generous) Graduate (updated versions are tempting but cockpit looks a bit cramped for adults up front?) Icon (way too fast for where I sail especially in comparison with other boats around us. I don't want to be Billy No Mates) Can't get exited about a Firefly and the Albacore is a tad too big and outside the performance envelope.
Yours expectantly (but not holding my breath)

We could either cut the rig down ... by a country mile. Or tie a bucket on the back.... Seriously it is easier to sail than an Enterprise and is more difficult to capsize. Happy Christmas and if you are not too heavy the Tasar is also worth looking at ... but you might need that bucket there as well !

I gather Tasars might stick a bit in the light stuff.
Given that we predominantly pursuit race in a varied handicap fleet we would like a boat that is close in performance to our rivals the fastest of which is a Supernova, the slowest a Comet and a myriad of boats in between. If we had an Icon we would have to wait around for ages before starting and would get less than an hours racing time and I need a longer sailing fix of a Sunday morning!
I am afraid at the moment the Enterprise we have (almost) perfectly fits the bill, but I can dream.

What RogerD doesn't say is that the Albacore goes well on Shearwater and carries weight so may be an option for Moo. We even managed to get all four out at once this year for some close racing - goosewinging down the lake all abreast it must have been an intimidating sight and no room for anything else!

You don't have to use the spinnaker, of course. However, the Albacore is only a fraction faster on PY than the Supersofa, isn't it?
As far as I can see, though, the Enterprise is perfect for the job - probably why no one has designed something else in that space.

We had several at our club that never ever used the spinnakers, and they still enjoyed sailing them. Doesn't sound like you have too many options.
How about a comet duo? Hideous bathtub in my opinion but small enough for your water, spacious inside, no spinnaker and modernish

I used to have a Miracle many years ago before spinnakers were adopted. Nice boats but would prefer not to have something with a PY taking into account a kite and the PY is outside the range I am looking at.
It would be interesting to see how a modernised Grad compares against our Ent.
Comet Duo? We have them in our hire fleet and apart from the fact they feel awful to sail they too fall outside chosen PY range.
Is there a gap in the market or am I just being difficult?
|
Posted By: Null
Date Posted: 24 Dec 14 at 9:09am
I don't think there is a gap to be honest, unless you want something super modern. The graduate fits that neither perfectly. Even with the standard kicker my wife can crew with space and the later gave setup we use is positively spacious! It tacks on a dime and is a very fast boat for its length. Works perfectly on our narrow restricted river and I would not be suprised if it is not faster than your enterprise on your lake.
|
Posted By: JimC
Date Posted: 24 Dec 14 at 9:15am
I think there are always gaps in the market if you get a telescope and hunt for a small enough gap. Whether there's enough there for a class to exist is another matter. I should have thought an RS400 or maybe 200 with the spinnaker gear removed would be a reasonable fit for your requirement.
As for gaps, when I did my Plusplus I thought there was a huge gap for a development singlehander bigger than a Moth. In practice it seemed No-one else agreed enough to open their wallet...

Sounds like fodder for another thread Jim. Gaps in the market.

The 400 is way out of scope on our water. There used to be a 200 once but on the rare occasions that the kite could be used to any advantage it was just a sitting target when it did not have right of way. The owner stuck with it for a season or two and went back to a N12.
If I got one and removed the kite gear, I would be disadvantaged by the PY and know that a veritable can of worms would be opened if I asked for a revised PY.
In all honesty I know we are sailing the right boat for our weight, agility and water. I am missing the responsiveness of the N12 but not its complexity. I now have a happy crew and competitively we are back where we wanted to be.
So perhaps I should be grateful and just hope that Santa leaves a nice pair of hot socks under the tree ready for the Boxing Day race.

This is a Sprog, popular in South Africa plus I have just got a decent grp,one here. I reckon this is something close to,what you need. Not my boat in the video, but it gives a better idea than the pics I have found. Maybe if Santa comes via jo'burg?

There are a surprisingly large number of returns each year for various classes in configurations like no spinnaker. Very occasionally in the past some have actually gained enough returns for a published number.

Nasty striped main and Jib but I am sure someone will make you a white set. |
I used to have a L2 Regatta. Fantastic in a blow but made a grown man cry in a drifter. Not a comfortable boat for adults to crew in unless wiring either, so I sold it and purchased my first N12.

Dear Santa,
I'm afraid that I haven'tbeen a good boy unfortunately.
Don't get me wrong, it's been a blast, but I don't think that you'd consider my behavior as 'good' by any stretch of the imagination.
Can I add that not allof it was entirely of my doing but, sadly, I'm an easily led type of bloke so, well, there you go.
You could punish me by dropping off any one of the following on my drive (preferably with trailer/trolley/covers and a fancy-dan paint job...): RS600 / RS700 / Musto Skiff / 49er / Foiling Moth.
In readiness for Christmas 2015, can you make sure that you have a rubbish bag to carry away the various bits of whichever boat you bring me this year?
Thanks,
Yours, extremely naughtily
Lee

I think if I told the missus Santa was bringing us a Sprog she might have a few words to say on the subject and Jesus (other religions are available) might be one of them.

Looks nice, but I'd never fit it in the drive, and it would be a b*gger to sail single handed.

I suppose that having been ill together with Madame Tick since last Friday and still not feeling good, a Wayfarer with a red cross in the gel coat would have been a good idea. A bad end to a very enjoyable year.

I didn't get a new boat from Santa this year. Instead I got a surprise on Christmas eve when I went to pack my boat up to move clubs and found a crack in the port gunwale. A crack which had previously been repaired by my local boat builder and had spent no more then two hours on the water since. So that's the boat out of action again while it's off being repaired and I find a buyer for a kidney to fund the work.

Kev, I think I would be asking the local boat builder to repair it properly!

Vintage champagne saucers and some martini glasses - I will figure out a sailing application when the weather warms up.
