Have just started out, they seem to let you in mid fleet which is good so already ahead of Gruitt and Sargesail who seemed to have stop for a beer in Gib.
Said I was going to do this after the last Vendee but will give the first leg a go and see what happens, not going to pay for any extras and will only be checking a couple of times a day.
Is it the same as last time in terms of wind and weather changes at 7am and 7pm?

I think if you join part way thru they insert you at te 70th percentile (or some such). Yup, 0700 and 1900 wind changes (this'll change next weekend, yes?)

I'm not looking forward to checking in this morning. After making significant progress over the last couple of days I started haemorrhaging places from the 7pm weather update as I hit the light wind area around the canaries. I elected to gybe and go round the east side rather than straight through it which looked to have even lighter airs.
Why does the VOR go all the way over to south America on its way to cape town?

I only ever look in this section so only came across this game when BS put up the Virtual Vendee thread a couple of years ago and enjoyed that one apart from going on holiday for a few days in December, missing an Ice gate and spending 3 days going back.
Would not have been doing this one without spotting the thread on here, although I would be doing a bit better if it had the name @Virtual Volvo@ rather than VOR as I only opened it 3 days after the race started so missed all the fun the med

Good to see the leaders of our little group have sailed into a large hole. What is the deal with breakages? I have seen a few people complain about them on the VR forum but I don't know if it is tongue in cheek comments or are people really getting messages saying "oh dear, you have a broken halyard" or whatever....?

No idea about breakages. Just broke the 500 miles to go barrier. The rich certainly got richer towards the end. I've struggled like hell to keep in wind last few days but those guys (who were only 40 miles away from me a few days ago) just managed to get far enough south to pick up a ton of wind and stick with it. I see you there, with miksbrick, one of the pistonheads contenders. I think I probably should have stayed closer to south america for a little longer. but I lost my nerve. Yep, only been looking twice a day which in most of the time in the Atlantic trade winds is all it needs, might get a bit more tricky in other areas but I think that is why they offer options to pay for extras which let you plan sail changes and course changes when you are not around (not going to take them up though). Where are we heading for next and when? It would be good not to miss the start this time

When you are in the trade winds twice a day isn't to costly but when the wind is more mixed up you run the risk of spending a few hours stuck head to wind or going DDW or with that old familiar chestnut when you log in in the morning and discover 'you have been sailing with a bad sail for 5 hours 23 mins'
Finished a couple of days ago at 10578, made a big gain by heading close to the ice gates in the south Atlantic as I crossed the equator at about 20,000. Tom,I think you followed within a couple of grids of me most of the way from just north of the Canaries up until deep into the south Atlantic when I went a little further south.

Working now, first couple of days on this leg I think having the course change options will be a big benefit as it could reduce the distance sailed by quite a bit until we can properly go east.
|
Posted By: laser193713
Date Posted: 21 Nov 14 at 8:30pm
Yes, certainly got me around the cape a little quicker than some others. It says I am at around 17 or 18 thousandth at the moment although when i start heading north i expect to pop out at around 200-300th. The big gains in this leg will be made heading north into the gulf and through the soft stuff before we get to the trade winds again.
|
Posted By: andy101
Date Posted: 22 Nov 14 at 11:35am
Yes, I have messed up and gone North far to soon, saw a bit of a window in a forecast which then quickly changed 24 hours later and I didn't cut my losses
|
Posted By: laser193713
Date Posted: 25 Nov 14 at 12:05pm
Well it's all gone a bit wrong for those who went south. It seems that the current leaders are going to be the ones to get going north first and fastest. I'm currently being nailed by left hand shifts and the next few days look very painful! I think I will be lucky to finish this leg in the top 10k if things carry on like this!

I went north just early enough to get a whacking great header all of today whilst the people east of me are sailing at 110 true. I am stuck going northwest upwind. Tomorrow i should have more wind than those east of me and will then only be losing out to half the fleet!

Finally had the kite up today after about a week of going slowly upwind. If I miss the 7am course change tomorrow I will run aground on the coast of Madagascar at around 9.30! I think however I will be stuck in a headwind again in the next couple of days.
Phatphant is in a good place further ahead and may get around the mark and start heading north before the wind goes against us again.
Who is Tedros? I think we collided at some point this afternoon, can you do a virtual 720 please?

Seems like a week. Almost everyone else put on their virtual bobble hats and headed for the roaring forties whereas I put on the virtual suncream and followed the direct route at about a third of the speed, they have temporarily slowed down but I think they will hook into more following breeze when I get another headwind in a couple of days.
|

Date Posted: 27 Nov 14 at 7:11am
Looks like the gamble to go north early might have just paid off, but only just. My positioining wasn't great heading south east for the first few days and now I'm somewhere near the front. Last night I dropped out of the top 1000 for the first time in 3 or 4 days and sgtpepper took at least 100 miles out of me.
Finally though I'm heading north again only losing fractions of a knot to sgtpepper but still losing places overall.
Can't wait to pass mauritius and start heading down wind again.
I'd be stuffed though if it wasn't for the true wind angle autopilot and the auto sail change extras though. No doubt about it.

all getting tricky again now! I am favouring a course way west of the rhum line for more breeze over the coming days but it may come and bite me in the backside when the wind comes from the north east later in the leg and i end up putting a tack in. Hopefully I can stay far enough east before that shift so that i can fetch the mark further north.

Still not any clearer which way to go, left was looking better a day or two ago but less obvious now don't really want to go straight up the middle but if undecided for to much longer that is what will happen
Has anyone got a better weather site they are using?
