23 for sale on Apollo Duck right now, that's a lot isn't it?

Is class still active and healthy?

Of course, no one bought one just because the handicap was favourable and no one is now selling because it isn't. It's just coincidence.

I'm sure that most of the big blokes who liked racing against others at class events will be staying put.

I think that's one of the issues- the Phantom, despite the bandit bullsh*t which really only affects club racing, was a class primarily known for its travelling circuit- and the beer sessions.  With less folks travelling to events these days- windguru and the economy being the biggest culprits, numbers drop below whatever that 'critical mass' was which made them look interesting in the first place.

Maybe 23 blokes have just ordered new boats and put their old boats on the market...... :-)

Can't recall (and I've sailed Phantoms on and off since the mid 90s) seeing so many Phants for sale at the same time, but then again there have been plenty of new boats sold in recent years which has grown the class considerably. Still a great boat IMHO.

It may sound like a lot of boats but the range in ages, specs and prices does not really suggest any trend in the class.

The current boats for sale range from a modern Woody, two polyester boats, 11 Vandercraft epoxy boats (varying rig options) with the remainder being Ovington boats (the most recent incarnation of the boat) of various ages and again, specification.  Thats probably a span of boats built over the last 25 years.

During the last few years many Phantoms have changed hands regularly via the Class website or Apollo Duck.  Competitively priced, or good spec boats continue to sell quickly as boats of all ages place well at open meetings when in the right hands.  There may be a bit of repricing going on for the Vandercraft epoxy boats but I think that's more down to the mast spec on a particular boat as design (and sailor understanding) has moved on somewhat with new designs making the boat easier to sail especially for those of us that fit the 'traditional' Phantom physique....

My guess is that the Phantoms aren't doing too badly when compared to other 40 year old classes.

Cheers
Ian

When I sold mine earlier in the year there were virtually no boats less than 3 years old on the market. Eventually someone wanted to join the SW slow fan club and bought a Done so I was lucky. The new boat is fantastic and Rodney I wont be buying a Zero soon sorry!
If your thinking of a new single hander, give the Phantom a go after the Nationals if anybody wants a demo come and talk to me at Lee. Some really good boats on the market at the moment for cheap prices.
