Sorry to inflict upon this bored another question about the PY system however I am interested to know (and I know they are only a guidline) if it is possible for a class to challenge the allocated PY given by the RYA?

no- not directly. The PY system is a product for affiliated clubs, not dinghy classes or individual RYA members.

In fact, clubs are encouraged to change numbers that do not work for them. Few do, for all the reasons that have been mentioned on here since the forum came into being, lack of data being the biggest, probably.
What class? Or is it more a general question?

Some classes certainly whinge about their PY to the RYA.
Its hard to think of any basis they could really challenge a published number on because the PY is a service for clubs based on the data the clubs supply.

Statistically the data maybe low in numbers, too low for the truly worried, but in all honesty how many people on here feel that they have put in a bad race by more than 10% of their maxium potential, and how often does that occur? (genuine question). Not many and only a few times i should imagine, I would go as far as to speculate that most sail to their max ability 95-98% of the time. Therefore although more numbers would be great, actually the numbers that are being generated are quite accurate. Just my view, not data to back that up, but my experience of what I've seen on the water and what is seen on the spreadsheet.

Really? I'd say I sail to max potential maybe, if lucky, 10% of the time. Most races I'm aware of the many, many mistakes I'm making.

That's the scary thing Rupert- just imagine how many mistakes you (and most certainly I) would be making that we are unaware of!!!

I suggest you go on the RYA website and read the info re: the Portsmouth Yardstick scheme. You will clearly see that the numbers are provided as a guide to clubs based on statistical analysis of real race results. The RYA encourage clubs to use the PYS website to generate recommended local numbers (as well as providing a means to easily provide the raw race results for their analysis), which if you have a high enough confidence factor you can then apply. The big issue is that most clubs are to scared to for fear of upsetting people.
As has been done to death on here, even the big adjustments made in recent years aren't nearly as big as the difference within a fleet between the best and worst sailors so don't worry about it and just get out and enjoy sailing and set your own personal goals.
