Due to an organisation problem we ended up with a dreadfully light turnout at an open yesterday, but oddly, with what turned out to be 4 closely matched boats, it turned out to be entertaining to watch, and I hope to compete in, and with boats all finishing close we could turn round races quickly and got 6 races in a day.

This idea is probably impractical due to the amount of on the water organisation required, but I thought, what about a league? One lap races at 5 minute intervals, 5 boats per start and the boats seeded in known pecking order. Last boat in each race is demoted to next start, winner is promoted. Prizes for most wins and most promotions perhaps.

Given good enough organisation and separate start and finish boats you could probably be setting starts off continuously because the league 1 start only needs to wait for league 2 to finish, not everyone.

Could even be done with a mixed fleet I suppose, start the leagues in handicap order and prizes for most promotions or something, although tricky to know what to do if the best sailor has the fastest boat.

A sort of a ladder arrangement...

Sounds like it's begging for a final longer medal race for the top flight, but that might not please everyone. Especially the person who was demoted in the last round...

Hi Jim
Sounds a bit like the way they do Model boat racing.
I think much better with all one class than mixed fleet.
Cheers

we pretty much did that in the Solos a few times last year.... snake around the leeward mark in order, change the starting order up after the finish.  It was really good fun, totally informal and mixed it up a bit.

I preferred it to the races we did as personal pursuits a) it was quicker turnaround and clerical mistakes on when to start were less common b) it encouraged tight racing from the off.

I would do it again without hesitation.
