To be honest I think he's a very clever bloke. If you had the skills and determination to convince multiple big bucks sponsors to fund you to follow around the Laser fleet at all the world events then you'd be pretty happy with life and somehow this guy has managed it. I'd say the Muppets in all of this are the company representatives who've handed over cash to a no-hoper.
|
Posted By: yellowwelly
Date Posted: 01 Apr 14 at 5:59pm
If they really have handed over any cash.... that's a lot of logos on that page, easily right clicked, sdave image as from their owners websites.
Having been involved with sponsorship in the past (pre-recession), that's a lot of deals he's converted.... so very well done if it's genuine. His background appears to be with Ogilvys, so who knows, perhaps his Linked In profile would be more telling about his networks and connections....

|

His LinkedIn profile is pretty sparse. As you say Ogilvy seems to be his main backer and employer.

AN OLYMPIC level sailor will be helping
business sail at the third Free2Network Business Conference on Friday, February
1 in Llanrwst.
Laser class competitor Chris Russell
will be sharing his story with over 200 businesses from across the region.
Chris narrowly missed out on competing
at London 2012 but will share his journey to Rio 2016.
Chris will discuss his Olympic campaign
experiences, how he and his team operate, and how there are lessons and skills
which are transferable between the top sport and the business world.

Fraud is a deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain (adjectival form fraudulent; to defraud is the verb). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraud#cite_note-1" rel="nofollow - [1] As a legal construct, fraud is both a civil wrong (i.e., a fraud victim may sue the fraud perpetrator to avoid the fraud and/or recover monetary compensation) and a criminal wrong (i.e., a fraud perpetrator may be prosecuted and imprisoned by governmental authorities). Defrauding people or organizations of money or valuables is the usual purpose of fraud, but it sometimes instead involves obtaining benefits without actually depriving anyone of money or valuables, such as obtaining a drivers license by way of false statements made in an application for the same. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraud#cite_note-2" rel="nofollow - [2]
Has this guy got any results to back up these claims?
I'm not even clear if he is after the GBR or IRL slot ...
The only "result" I could find with a quick google was a 104th (no show) sailing as GBR

and here is the moral dilemma - if I see someone having their pocket picked, I'd feel that I ought to intervene. So what's the difference here? The lesson tho, seems to me, if you are going to perpetrate a con, go large.
The weasel defence is perhaps that people are helping him with his 'journey' and they will gain profile and publicity as a consequence. Failing to get to compete for a medal is probably neither here nor there - after all how many of the great unwashed could today name any one of our four 2012 470 medalists? I'd argue that, to those in the know at least, they have actually marked themselves out as, err, marks, which is not exactly good publicity is it?
BTW, anyone want to buy Tower Bridge from me? Don't tell anyone, but Boris asked me to flog it for him because it's in the way of the flight path to his new airport...

I have to say I feel the same way ... are these businesses being taken for a ride or are they extracting some Olympic hopeful glow on the cheap by sponsoring a no-hoper?
Had this guy ever had a reasonable placing in a decent regatta?

I'm not sure what to think about this, on the one hand it's the reality TV approach coupled to a naive belief that hard work and training alone should be enough for anyone dedicated enough to succeed, or and I don't know the answer to this, but has Ireland got a male Laser Olympic rep? I know they don't have a Windsurfer because my nephew who is of Irish decent (Grandfather) could qualify but the RYA won't release him. So it could be with that goal in mind, in which case he could get to go to the Olympics and this is a way of financing all the training that would be necessary for him to have anything other than an Eddie the Eagle prayer.
I think some of you are showing a little of the green eyed monster having too much of a go at him, not that I've followed this he's obviously made some silly assertions prior to all this, but what was that Europa Regatta that he won?
He can't be totally useless can he?

It is recognised that some of the most successful businessmen have a psychopathic element to their personality that might be needed to enable "mass redundancies" to be effected as cost saving practices when it is clear that those actions devastate communities.
Is it fraud?.. I am not sure, businesses are approached all the time for sponsorship or business to business input. It is up to them to carry out "due diligence" to protect their shareholders or owners from unwise investments.
What is clear is he is not approaching anyone in the sailing industry and you have to be pretty special to get a financial contribution from an unrelated industry.
Anyone who is really worried can always forward a link to this thread to ill-informed parties.

The only conclusion I can draw from this is that it's some kind of social media experiment or case study project for Ogily.... to secure that many genuine sponsors / patrons / £500 club members whatever, would imnsho, be a hell of a feat for a professional athlete who'd pick sailing for a discipline - even for someone with RYA backing and a results card to show for themselves.

It would be quite a fun thing to tag along on the Laser circuit and give it your best shot competing against the great and the good of the game. A good way of motivating oneself to get fit, push yourself to your limits, find out exactly how competent you are and not die wondering. Giving it your best shot and getting the most out your potential is a great and worthy thing to do. So good on him for that.
But he's not got a chance of qualifying for the games based on either his current form or his demonstrated rate of progress. If his sponsors haven't done their due diligence, well that's their problem. Perhaps they have and they don't care how good he is, their sponsorship is a tax write-off, may not be for very much anyway and besides, he gets them exposure.
But he does appear to exaggerate his chances and skill level somewhat.

The thing that strikes me the most about the website is the large team supposedly in place to help him achieve his aims of getting to Rio. Robert Scheidt has come back with probably less of a support staff. The world has got decidedly weird if with natural talent you could not do better than he is doing with no coach and travelling to the events yourself with the boat on you back. Team GBR probably have a similar support structure over an entire class of sailors.
