Subject: DI course 14-18 April

Following my investigationas a few weeks ago, I was booked into a course from 14/18 April at Plas Menai to do my pre-assessment, coastal PB2 conversion and DI. Sadly, they rang yesterday and cancelled.

As these dates are ones I have set up family for and everything, I am now trying to find a course that is actually running that week. I will be doing my pre-assessment on Sunday, so that is covered, but as I have an inland PB2, it may well have to be an inland course, unless I can sort an assessment for that beforehand, too.

Problem is, the places which have a course don't seem to be able to guarentee they are going to run. The easy one for me would be Queen Mary, but currently, I am the only taker.

So, does anyone have or know of a course set up for that week which needs an extra body, please?

Rupert,
I know a few of our guys are doing a DI course fairly soon. I think they've already done the pre-assessment.
Sadly, I don't know the exact dates but you could drop an email to Gary at TRAINING@MPSC.CO.UK if that's any help?
He may also be able to point you towards our local RYA rep that was trying to get people from several clubs onto a course.
Drop him a line and see what he comes up with.

Always welcome to stay at ours if something does suit.

All sorted!

I am now booked in with the nice people at Sport Solent Watersport Centre at Warsash, staying at Dibles caravan park nearby.

Anyone know anything about the area please? Either the sailing area or the pubs?

First Warsash SC if it is open if not a quick beer in the Rising sun then.
Take the small pink ferry over the river to Hamble then try Bugle , King and Queen, and White Hart(many other pubs I cant remmeber) plus any of the many sailing clubs.
Once out of the river you are into the Solent/ Southampton water rule number one the ships do not give way and are allways going faster than you think. Plus idiots in stink boats.
Have a great time.

I gave you a good pubcrawl to improve your sailing the following day!
Not relax in one pub, but take the ferry and have a wander round Hamble a lovely place with more boats than you can imagine of all sorts.

Did the 2009 Firefly nats in Hamble. Have fond memories (if vague) of the pubs. Pub crawls best done in company, so I guess it will depend upon the others on the course.

There is a car park that is free in Warsash and a public slip too.

Many of us have done the course so if you need advice with your presentation do ask but from experience, make it practical, even tides can be interactive!

Interactivness does appear to be the key. I've been doing sailing presentations on and off for a decade now, but they still make me nervous. Much easier to a bunch of genuine learners than to a load of awkward buggers on a course, thats for sure.

I also know very little about tidal sailing, so any pointers on the important points of that most welcome!

Rising Sun on the hard does nice food too - had lunch there last month. Also short car ride from P&B and Force 4 dinghy chandlery.

Get and read up to date copies of the logbooks plus Start Sailing and Better Sailing. It's also worth getting the Advanced Sailing handbook to check up on the Method for Seamanship Skills.

On a more serious note, never having done any kind of sailing course, but I do always suggest to newcomers that they use the tide to their favour in the event of the wind dropping, even if it is unfavourable, you can always use it to get ashore by setting your sails accordingly with the tide on the lee side it will generate enough air flow over the rig to get you to the shore in our part of the world.

Light wind and tide together is the biggest 'mare. Effectively dead calm but heading off, anchor anybody?Cry

The Ferryman at the top of the hill is the best of the pubs in Warsash. The Rising Sun is often busier but I am more of a fan of the Ferryman. Plus it is closer to Dibles Road so after a few beers you don't have to negotiate the hill, having done that a few times while fairly well dosed up I am speaking from experience! LOL

Ah, ha, so a pub crwal in Warsash is possible too!

The Dibles camping website mentions a pub 400m away - would that be the Ferryman?

Most likely the Jolly Farmer, but that is in the other direction. It does some really good food but you have to like cats, they just let them stroll around the place. Nice pub, occasionally smells of cat piss. LOL

Otherwise there is the Silver Fern, which I have only been in a handful of times, it's not as "friendly" as the other two pubs but is good for watching rugby etc. Personally I would stick to WSC, The Rising Sun or The Ferryman. The suggestion of travelling over to hamble would be great if the ferry ran past about 6pm... unless you fancy a £30 taxi back by road! Ouch

Any thoughts on sailing institution Wayfarers? - I've not sailed one in a decade or more - any quirks to keep in mind?

Sailing and teaching in a wayfarer is fairly straight forward, everything happens slowly and there is so much space for 3-4 people. Teaching in one is a doddle compared to the Vision, Bahia.

Reefing is either slap or using reefing lines, we tend to slab reef as the sails stretch over time and the reefing lines dont always work.

Rudderless is fairly straight forward due to the shape of the hull.

On a side note, it is worth reading up on each point of the Teaching Flow chart. You may be asked to reconstruct the flow chart from the G14 (RYA Instructor Handbook)

Just hope that they have a winch or lots of bodies to haul it up the slipway when its low tide.

A good racing sailor should have all the skills neded for the DI course and the pre entry test should make sure of that.  After that, and far more importantly, the course is all about how well you communicate your skills to others.  Clear concise briefings, and interesting, informative presentations that keep to the time limit and don't waffle on, are far more important than the handling characteristics of any dinghy.

To be well prepared get your SI to help you practise your land drills, centre and aft main, read G14, read the RYA's Start Sailing Booklet, read the Advanced Sailing Handbook (with useful DVD) and practice the pre entry skills so you don't go to jelly on the day.

With regard to sailing in tide, check out tide times beforehand, to score brownie points, then use the strongest element - wind or tide - to help complete your manoeuvre.

Thank you all for that! Nessa, the idea behind the question was simple - the more you know about the boat you are sailing, the less attention the boat needs, and the more can be given to the people. As I won't get the chance to sail a Wayfarer before the course, I thought the hive mind might have something to impart. As it did!

I'm also lucky that I spent last weekend helping on an AI course, so got lots of practice teaching the Method under the eyes of 2 SI's. And this weekend I'm going on a instructor refresher course, too... odd to be doing it before the DI, but I've been teaching as an AI for the last 5 years. Very rarely to new beginners, though, as I've been race coaching, mainly, so that side of things still has me slightly nervous.

The key thing to remember with beginners is to remember they don't yet understand the weird and wonderful language of sailing.

Note "kicker kicker kicker" is not a useful explanation for "we are going to gybe, grab the kicker and swing the boom across".  And that heading up and bearing away do not resemble anything in Plain English.

Course completed! Mind, just as an inland one, as I still need the odd bit to get the coastal side of things, as I need a coastal PB2, and more coastal knowledge (the RYA do an online course) to get it updated.

Nice place to go and do it, though the tides were a bit fierce at times! Got lucky with the weather, though... sunshine and force 2-4 all week.

It has already happened, Nessa - I've been teaching at all the Junior group sessions for years either as a race coach or AI. Now I can teach the beginners, though I'm not sure why I want to...

Ah, I did the beginner group in oppies last week.  A pleasant chane to be doing some hands on stuff instead of running about 'supervising'.   We had 18 kids for a three day race camp.  It went really well.  I say beginners, but they were beginner racers really.  I do think adult level one us one of the toughest courses to instruct.

Doing Adult level one at the end of June, I think - should be an experience! With the DI course fresh in my mind, it might be easier than it might otherwise. Maybe...

The 'former boy' is a DI and I drove the rib for him yesterday while he took a beginners class. It was perhaps a little windy but it was interesting to watch what absolute beginners made of it all. Young people seemed to struggle with the concept of a boat needs to move to steer but they picked it up. Grown up students tried to make the boat do as they wished and they fought gybes and accidental tacks by trying to push the boom back. I have never seen so many people roll in backwards! Everyone kept at it though and I was impressed by that. I just hope that some of those young students stick with it and become members. We sure need some young members!
