After all the rain, gloom & mud bathed launches, we had a beautiful day here today, warm, boardies ad crash vest weather, and for the first time ever, in my single handed sitting down career, I cut my first port ender...
Time was I pulled these more often than not if ever they were on offer in my stand up world, but I've never had the confidence to go for one in a boat, with my crap off the line speed, but today, sun in the sky God in his heaven, a Soslow trying to shut the door on me and miss timing his Port end approach so had to troll on down to attempt a tack onto starboard under the starboard enders, who I'd judged correctly hadn't a snowballs chance in hell of getting across that line before a well placed port ender... Boom... 1st to the windward, then the gybe, then come the third how did i manage to screw it all up? Hit the mark. Even worse, nobody saw me and I still copped to it.. Then I managed to execute the longest cock a maimie 360 in the annals of cock a maimieness, 1st to 6th in one stalled out in bugger all irons fest. First time on the water (for all sorts of tedious reasons) since October. Half decent breeze on Grafham, ideal for remembering how to do this and figuring out of the stick waggler's elbows were OK. Windward shore, so having said goodbyes to parents (they were down from Scotlandshire, and headed back off whilst we were out) launched and went for a kite hoist. To find that the tack and head had been mixed up. Oops. Down, sorted quickly, back up, then a nice long blast dodging various RSs, Oppies and the club fleets. Lovely stuff. ------------- -_ Al |

Yup an excellent day to be on the water for first time since early December. Glad we opted to run the racing last week when it was gusting to 35knots.
Nice south to SSW breeze blowing the length of the lake. Main rival went over under spinnaker on a tight leg about 2 boats lengths dead ahead but just managed to avoid. A couple of laps later, we wondered why the spinnie would not fly then realised the halyard had come undone - first time ever. Tipped the boat over on the pontoon after finishing and got the halyard down. Went on to win the afternoon race after a beautiful plane under spinnaker which took us into lead before rival tried to claim room at the gybe mark, didn't have an overlap and did turns. Feet up, watching the rugby highlights with a glass of Pigs Nose, great day to be out, on and near the water... Even rigging and packing up was a pleasure. Happy Englishman with a nice glass of whiskey in hand :-)

Just a cracking day to go for a sail.
Got the EPS out after a long time of not sailing (Only had two sails in anything since last November!) Just the right sort of breeze for me in that boat and on a small, inland, gust-fest old gravel pit. up the front with the Merlin/K1/RS400 scrap though lost out downwind in the ligh & fickle bits of the lake (I've got to get my head round this gybing rather than dead down malarkey).... the 5-oh was long gone. 7th on handicap but I'm just pleased to have got out there to be honest. Donned the GF's pink top after race one, just for the hell of it. Cracking Weekend...
Yesterday I was helping run an RS200 open and they seemed to enjoy themselves with sunshine and breeze, whilst today I was allowed to race the Canoe as the house refurbishment is on schedule. Warm sunshine (ditched the spraytop for the afternoon races), interesting courses and the club hotshots in an RS500 to practically match race with... Goodness knows how many times my Canoe and their boat swapped places, but might even have been double figures in two 3 lap races, but we got one race on the water each (we'll draw a veil over handicap results after what happened to the club Canoe number this year!). Think we went round the penultimate mark of each lap overlapped 4 or 5 times... There was about a 70 year age spread out on the water, all competing together and socialising off, this really is a great sport :-) |

Had another blinding day today, bit more wind, even more excitement, battling it out with Rooster Man, a Laser and a stupidly well sailed Miracle that had no place being anywhere near, but just did, to be annoying and get in the way, I had to have a few words with them.... 
I so enjoy this sport, it's given me a totally new lease of life, just when i thought it was all beginning to tail off.. I love this little EPS, she whirs away when she gets a puff up her backside, just when they all thought they'd nailed us down, we'd get a puff, go whizzing deep low, take them all on the inside ad come out of the bottom mark back in the lead, just wish I could make it go as fast upwind stop them all coming back through me again.. Puts all this PY bollox into perspective. Me, I was on duty today and enjoyed the spectator sport. In the pursuit race it was a bit too windy for the British Moths to excel. My money was on the Enterprise, but the Supernova pulled through in injury time....Another cracking day.
Looking forward to getting afloat soon. |

In Courchevel, last day of a holiday, bombed my first black run, hit over 60 kph on GPS, rode in the park and managed a couple 50:50s on the easy boxes. I had the best black pudding in the world for lunch at the La Folie Douce in Meribel (proper dancing on the the tables ski joint) and to cap it all off, I just logged in here to check a PM (thanks Simon) and reminded myself there's a D-zero on order with my name on it.... Days don't get much better.
Home time tomorrow and I wonder if the dude who drives the shuttle will be the same fellow as the way here... He's also a sailor and windsurfer, but the amusing thing was he used to date one of Grumpf's daughters apparently. Small world! ------------- |

Pink solos are still great, but something (actually two things) were coming it that might just be better / nicer to sail... I picked the one I liked the look of most, and at the price, why the f**k not? BTW - this is being approached as an alternative to big windsurf kit.
As for the RS100... Obviously I'm the only one who got shot quick when reality struck, nice to know if I'd kept sailing it I would be inland champion this year (10.2)  ------------- |

YW, I know from what has been said on here that you aren't a small person. The D0 didn't look like a boat with a huge amount of reserve buoyancy, so I do wonder if you will struggle to get planing in the marginal stuff - ie, pre the windsurfer coming out. Another good one today, literally gave the lead away up the last beat, in my total arrogance of not slapping a cover on what should have been a loser tack to a laser, but got my best handicap result to date of 5th, I'd been dicing with the Laser exchanging the lead back and forth most of the race once the young upstarts in the absurdly well sailed Miracle were put back in their box.
Then as I'm bunging it on the trailer a load of fishing line and the bait bucket I'd been towing for heaven knows how long appeared trailing off the tiller, which could explain why my sailing genius somehow failed to shine through.. After last week's horribleness, I'm glad to say today was just lovely. Had friends over, and their 2 small children got their first taste of sailing, in a 2000, with my wife helming, their dad childminding and my daughter entertaining. Meanwhile, rupertson and I had given the Lightnings a good going over in the morning, ready for the Open next weekend, and then had a great sail in the afternoon, playing around and dropping in on the others in the 2000. We had a great day yesterday, the second Back On the Water session, and 14 boats turned out, a slightly different 14 from the first Saturday so it bodes well for the season ahead. Today was crappy, no wind at all so I just did maintenance chores. Useful, but dull. ------------- the same, but different... |

FINALLY got our recently purchased (and pink-decked) 420 out on the water.
We've actually had the boat for close to 2 months bur what with the storms/wind/rain general messiness we've not had that 'nice, calm first-sail' weather for a while.....until yesterday. It was lovely. Our attempt at learning this double-handed malarkey that's always scared us, it's why we have a series of single handers between us. Anyway, went well and, hopefully, will get us over our general fear of the bigger boats. All smiles back on the beach so that's a good sign? .... Our weekend was lovely. On Saturday we had the "middle class fest" which is our open day. Nice wind and our fabulous scenery. Home made cake, mown grass and clean lavatories. After the visitors had loaded their Range Rovers and left some of us went out for a quick thrash...then pub, so nice. Sunday similar weather but windy and I was officer. 17 boats out all wanting a personal course....I have none of that! Good racing, everyone fell in. Pub. Great weekend, and I don't have to go to work on Monday morning!

Lovely sail on Saturday at Haversham - see the D-Zero thread - I'd join that club if I were local, and have to say, just one lap racing against Lasers, Supernovas and an EPS in a 'generic sporty singlehander' was enough to remind me not all's bad with handicap racing (when it's done right anyway and there's more than 2 boats on the start line). Went home, cooked steak for my wife and an old uni mate, washed it down with some plonk. As for Sunday - spent it in the garden with my family and my wife and I shared a bottle of bubbly plonk, before then heading out for a Thai meal including another bottle of pink plonk. Can't complain. Plonk and dinghies... there are worse ways to live.

What an evening sailing my new Phantom for the first time in any breeze 15 knots south Westerly classic LOSSC evening race and you add the D DAY celebrations with Dakota dropping poppies, Spitfires Hurricanes and various other vintage aircraft roaring overhead.
Biggest crowd we ever had to watch us sailing! New boat went like a dream disregard the Phantom as a choice of singlehander at your peril a joy to sail up and down wind. ------------- Gordon Lossc |

Not exactly a cracking day, but I had my arse handed to me by that Laser again down the lake just as I thought I'd got everything dialled, that's what i like about sailing, however good you think you're becoming - you're not.
Damn near got overhauled by a Solo and a Streaker in one of those puffs that bring the whole fleet down while you're sitting in a hole with nothing... We are running our 3 evening Solstice regatta and for once the first two days have not been blown off or so light you cant make over the tide, and whats more the sun has been out.Summer evening racing is just brilliant.
We have also had good turnouts with a separate trainee/ novices start and smaller course for them. Just tonight to go fingers crossed the weather stays good. ------------- Gordon Lossc |

Well done again James, I won my first actual cup thing sailing a dinghy single handed, turned out is was the 'senior' prize but it'll do as a starter. They raced the Hythe Festival trophy for us as we sailed the same course as the Snipe Open five minutes after them. Your cheapest route would be to try and get hold of one of those big F2's there are a couple at our club although they are cannibalising them for the tracks and centreboards, but they do the job for your weight group and work well on flatter inland water.

Check the track still works OK and the centreboard, they are the two things most likely to fail or have failed and bodged to work after a fashion.
Starboards also have centreboard issues, our guy had to give up a race yesterday and came ashore cursing his Phantom saying he'll have to take it apart to get the centreboard out and back in after it jumped it's track. Cracking weekend with Whitefriars Juniors down at WPNSA, sailing from the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre. Even though it is some of the same people as when it ws sailaser, the enthusiasm, motivation, teaching skills and friendliness of the staff were fantastic. If you have a group looking for a place to go for a weekend away, couldn't recommend it highly enough. And as usual WPNSA reception were great at organizing the lunches and dinner despite the ever changing numbers, and the catering was just what we needed - plentiful and tasty! Stayed at Cove Holiday park, after a couple of years of fairly grotty bunk houses and hotels. Really, really nice, sea views, use of cafe for the Saturday night, friendly warden. All in all, with the sun out, all we could have done with was a little more breeze at times, though there was always enough to get out there, and on occasion there was enough to be perching in a serious manner... ------------- Firefly 2324, Puffin 229, Minisail 3446 Mirror 70686 |

Cracking day today. Running race training, but too windy to get anything done but mind capsized boats while they had an awesome sail. Borrowed daughter's Topper for final race of day, when it was gusting high 30s according to the annenometer. An interesting combo of fun and bricking myself. Just 2 of us out, me and a Phantom. Cracking race in the D-Zero yesterday. Was only intending to go for a blast but signed on 'just in case'. Was the only boat not to go over. Cracking racing in strong, gusty conditions for our first sail since November and the first time we've managed to sail the red Albacore to its handicap! 2nd in the pursuit after starting 5 minutes late (as usual even though we start last anyway) and first in the afternoon handicap, lapping everyone, and managing to beat the dayboat and topaz by more than the required 9 minutes.
So the recipe for winning in the Albacore is: 20mph+ gusting 30mph+ winds, bouncing off the trees as they whip down the lake. Many sailors pulling out having seen the forecast, Laser sailors changing to radial rigs, Heavyweight helm and crew determined to make a race of it and keep the boat upright! So can we have that weather again please to justify the harsh handicap? |

First race officer duty of the year last night, the sun was out, light winds and low tide but nobody moaned (Not to amazed as Paul was not around) when we set extra long line and a running start to get away from the shallows. Shortish windward leewards lots of laps planned just in case the wind improved, but only managed two as the wind began to die but all boats finished and somebody even came up and said well done in the bar. All this on a makeshift starting area while new changing rooms are being built. Good news all round I avoided a really light wind race, and get average points! ------------- Gordon Lossc |

More a cracking weekend, than just the one day, at one point two of us in the race box just had to wonder what our lives would have been like without sailing. We had the Snipes down over the weekend, getting them on and off the beach with their fixed rudders was a feat all of its own, then on the Sunday the Contenders joined them and we pitched in with our club race at 11, a very busy beach front, I haven't seen so many boats at Hythe since the hey days of the Scorpions. The place was really buzzing, then the cyclists turned up.. This has been a brilliant experiment, they meet at the club before setting off on their ride, then return mid morning whilst we're still out on the water. This has had the effect of a couple of converts and more signed up for courses later in the summer, just goes to show the potential for crossover from mixed sports clubs. The wind made things interesting, delivering just about every point of the compass some times on the same leg, but it kept the sea reasonably flat until the last couple of races when it kicked back round to SW, one of the rescue boats conked out the entire fleet decided to comes ashore which made for and interesting moment. But it looked like everyone was enjoying the conditions without too many exceptions and it's given us the taste to host some more and some of our members got crew rides in the snipes, although hopefully without encouraging any more participants in our fleet, not the ideal boat to get off. (You stand off up to your neck holding the stern whilst the crew attempts to attach a rudder assembly as the waves roll in and the boat pitches up and down.. great fun. )------------- https://www.ease-distribution.com/moses" rel="nofollow - Foil fun |

Did the Hillhead triangulation race yesterday, lovely sail down from Lee, bad start and nearly hit a 600 rack when he tacked having not seen me, but overall an excelent fun sail and managed 3rd overall. Sun, small chop, unique race thats a bit of fun which you never know how its going to turn out and SE force 4 building to 5/6 for the bad bit the long beat back to Lee after racing. Our first cracking day this year lots out, Sunny offshore 10-14mph, lots of boats lots of cyclists and the natural order of things restored on the water, over the wate,r with the EPS finishing three minutes clear... Wellllllllll, maybe not so much 'cracking' as 'at least I got over my meltdown'
At our clubs Lightning368 Open a few weeks back I ended up in a 'totally and utterly lost the plot in biblical style' situation. Enough for me to not race in the afternoon and take a couple of weeks off. Anyway, reinventing the Roger Melly profanisaurus was, in hindsight, perhaps a positive outcome! The weekend just gone I decided, after a bit of a sailing break, to 'just go sailing'. Took the 600 out on Saturday on our front lake full of gusts, swirls, dead spots, massive shifts and more gusts (ideal then!!! :-\) ...3 little capsizes but it still makes me smile. TBF it was just a test float to check out some daggerboard case work I'd done. Sunday? - a bit of club racing in the Lightning to see if I could get my mojo back. Nice breeze, good courses, nice planing, good splashage at times and whilst I wouldn't say I'm fully over it, I reckon i'm 80% there. Brilliant evening race
All day the forecast backed up by bramblmet had been light and rubbish but 4.30pm late sea breeze really great 4/5 sunshine with solent chop/ waves to play with downwind. Best sail of the season so far, Phantom is a delight to sail. ------------- Gordon Lossc |

| Cracking day yesterday at Combs. Brisk wind and sun sparkling on waves. I think my old Lightning went faster in my hands than ever before! My slot gasket made of damp proof course worked as well. |
