Hi all

Yes, we are aware of the this and talking to our hosts and looking at the Web Wiz forum site to find what on earth the problem is. For some reason it has got really slow since the 9th October. Just like you I am pulling my hair out except in my case this is my problem and I've got to solve it!

We are going to move up to the next level of hosting since it will greatly improve speed throughout the site but with the immense traffic levels (340,000 users / month on this site alone) this isn't cheap  .

This time at least we can do the upgrade before it all goes horribly wrong like in November 2003. If I ever have a week like that again I'm just walking out of this job.

No doubt this post will bring on the techies talking about the various merits of hosting on a Linux server and how it should all be written in JSP or PHP instead. Believe me when I say that is easier said than done!

All in all though I have to say a big thank-you to the YachtsandYachting.com readers since you are a far more tolerant and polite group than those on our sister site http://www.boards.co.uk - www.boards.co.uk - take a look at

WOW, Mark! Are you looking after that forum too?

They know how to give you a hard life, don't they? Maybe because windsurfers don't go out as much as dinghy sailors, or maybe because they're all blokes, thinking techy and having an answer for everything - some posts start with "We were talking about it in the pub...."  LOLLOL That's sums it all!

PS. Carshalton, KnightMare and all Really should get out more members: top posters on that forum clock 5424 messages... that puts our measly 1000+ in perspective, doesn't it?

I really wouldn't recommend breath holding while accessing the site today. Every time I post I (eventually) get a code-500 server error. It is the slowest ever today.

I also recommend not looking at false dawns and thinking the odd moments of speed mean its all ok again.

For the techno people out there it is our SQL shared box that has had a case of the go-slows in the last few weeks (I think it is seriously overloaded) and is causing huge virtual memory usage as the requests stack up. This causes its own problems on the page serving box. Currently we're getting round it be rebooting far too often.

We're getting a new server - unfortunately this isn't something I can't do by clicking my fingers. Instead I have to do it by dragging rocks up hills. It'll be sorted, it just takes time...

Thanks for letting us know. I also run a number of sites so you have my sympathy.

I don't know if it's a false dawn or a real sunrise on a better future, but the forum is really smooth and fast these days... Have you waved your magic wand at the server, Mark? Whatever you've done,   grand job, thank you !

Hi BNS

We've had words with our hosts and it is sorted for the moment. No server reboots in the last week.

We still need to go through the server upgrade since the traffic on this website just keeps going up and up. Things still get slow when we have around 1,500 concurrent users.

Cheers, Mark

That's the price to pay when you're too popular! Good to see that the forum attracts more and more readers.

Thank you for the update, Mark Smile

I'm the only one on the forum right now! If I stay up so late, it's only to prevent traffic jams at rush hour, so Carshalton can entertain us with tales of his Laser4000 acrobatics, just before the resounding "Come downstairs, Luke! Dinner's served!"  LOL
