Living in the home of the specials!
And staying on facebook and away from forums.

One of the more irritating folk on the Boards Forum has gone on vacation so the general tenor has lifted and the place livened up a bit so there's been a fair bit of banter going on, is where I've been, plus I haven't been out since the Solo trauma for one reason or another (laying low in case they make me buy it).

Packing up the boat to take it to QMSC tomorrow?
I will be there causing havoc and identifying all the non class legal modifications!

If I were going I'd be at the wrong end of the fleet to be worrying about whether a hotshot had the wrong jib up and whether it made 0.5 of a point's difference to his handicap. Odd reason not to go, really. My reasons are 1, I'm too lazy and 2, I'm not fond of large crowds.

Rupert, trust me it has nothing to do with my results. Just the principle. It shows a lack of respect to other competitors and organizers who have spent their time and money to race within the spirit of the rules. To my mind the Merlin jib fiasco a few years ago was a mistake and was blown out of context, but after that manufacturers, sailors and classes should of learned. It gives the whole thing a bad taste to me so I have decided to only enter events I really enjoy doing or involve no other investment from me. Oxford blue and Stevie Nick... The bloody Mary will cope with out gob sh*tes like me that languish in 100th place but at least I will sleep safe in the knowledge that some Muppet has not treated me with complete disrespect.... I wont get into a big debate about it again, its been done to death. Its just my point of view, be it right, wrong or whatever.

I know Rupert. There is only so much anyone can say about sailing and we have exhausted other "interesting" topics. Tell you what I am doing, going to the club to fit a bung in a sensible place on a friends Lightning, birthday present. The fact that she is 43 years younger than me has nothing to do with it....... John Betjamin wrote a poem called "Late Flowering Love".
"My head is bald, my breath is bad, unshaven is my chin, I have not now the lust I had when I was young in sin"
(paraphrase)
Then, Venice on Tuesday with me old dutch. Does it flood in January? It did a bit last April. Do we need boots?

yellow ones.
I'm bailing on my spot for the BM- a crappy forecast eclipsed by a good one for Sunday at a (slightly) warmer south coast beach with windsurf boards.
Solo will be back on the market at a reduced price next week. I have no immediate plans to replace it, only festering temptations that can easily be tempered by the price tag vs time on the water value judgement.
laters aligators- fair winds and good sailing!

Ruscoe, you are quite right - reasons for going or not are purely a point of view - whether someone else finds them odd isn't reason to rubbish them. Apologies.
iiiiiitick, if it floods in Holland, don't you need a boat, not wellies?

I am taking 3 youths to the event. Last year's crew is competing in a Topper, new crew in 200 and another joining a QM boat. All going to experience what is a great event that they wont otherwise get to take part (none have their own boats). Ok the winds not great but I am only 20 minutes away, so for us lot, its very close.

I am also not bothering. If I go it means being stuck in London all weekend and no sailing on Sunday. Since we finally have a forecast that will allow decent boat handling practice, and that is what I need most, I'm opting to stay home. Too much stress for one race and I'm getting a bit disheartened by a string of truly crap results. I now know I have an entry for the Brass Monkey next weekend - a top event in a great location - so hopefully I can drag my sailing up a notch by then, something I won't do by faffing about at the BM.

Do come over and do mine afterwards! Save me doing this to drain it... http://s206.photobucket.com/user/nikky_pics/media/liftinglightningIMG_0207.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Ah, ladies and moving bungs.....! If I was there I would fly to your assistance! On my boat and on the young ladies boat I fitted a new bung about 3" left of the bottom pintle and about 1 1/4" up. It is very easy and improves the quality of ones life beyond measure.
It was so cold down at the club I was only 15 mins from unlocking the gate to locking it again. Job done.

I just sponge mine out through the hatch if any water gets in - I've never even unscrewed the bung. Love the picture, though!

Ah, Rupert you have that elusive non leaking Lightning. I thought the joke about Lightnings was that you cant delay the start......or all the boats will sink.

In the lightnings defence, I must say no 333 is also a dry boat. She never even lets in a drop of water ever. And like Rupert I have never opened the bung.

We are waiting, poised and alert, like fighter pilots. We sit in metaphorical wicker chairs on the green grass of an English summer. When we hear the drone of an approaching sailing topic we will leap to our feet and scamper to our machines which have been warmed up by our laptop mechanics. Then, and only then, will we soar through the clear blue sky attacking with comment, conjecture and assumption.
Until then we will speak of bungs.

Manna from heaven; Carbon spars for Lasers, EXCELLENT, I'd have them if I still had one. Gotta be better than wrecking your sail with enough cunningham to bend a 2 inch scaffolding pole.
Class legal, who cares, it's a beach boat being shoe horned into a racing boat anyway.
