Is there a way to 'measure' how well (or not) you have you straps set up for optimal posture and leverage when hiking... Without having a camera at the back of the boat or someone following in another boat with a camera? I think I hike ok and I don't get sore after sailing but am I kidding myself?

Interesting question. Maybe if you tried to replicate your position on a hiking bench it might be possible to take some measurements.

On a long beat I find I move my position slightly (without changing the strap set-up) to change pressure points on muscles and joints so I think there would be too many variables to measure. But that's probably down to lacking fitness...

As my coach used to tell me... "If it hurts you aren't fit enough, if it doesn't hurt you haven't hiked hard enough" If you aren't hurting put some effort in!Thumbs Up

If it hurts its time to tack laser coach's eh? know nothing about sailing.

You could also set up onshore, get some pics taken or get someone good to have a look at you.  I was out watching a beginner yesterday.  So many of his issues could easily be fixed by getting his posture and ergonomics right.  Never underestimate the value of the land drill.

Hiking should be banned, if any part of the buttocks overhangs the gunwale it should mean instant disqualification, if not for style and dignity reasons, all that toilet seat straining, most unedifying, not at all cool.
Leaning back a bit shouldn't be frowned upon, but anything else, nope, sorry not the sort of thing a Gentleman should contemplate in public.
And as to disgusting almost pornographic displays as have often been witnessed on these boards I'm only pleased that both Google and M**rosoft are now combining in their efforts to prevent search engine access..

Good Lord, errr...thingy, for once I find myself agreeing with you. In my case I adopt an 'elegant lean' at most. 'Why hike when you can spill'.

I'm not sitting next to him, he's got plastic windows.

I have seen something that might work, used in cycling to measure the angle bend of the knee.  I know what's comfortable and what's not and a process of trial and error or two-boat tuning has led to decent results in the past.... I'm just wondering if anyone out in the world of 'sports science' has ever looked at this, obviously it has been done for cycling

What's wrong with plastic windows?

Old wooden windows in old properties have drafts, history and character, what this country needs. Plastic windows are new and convenient.  Wars were won with wooden windows and coal.

Now, you see, that's where this topic started, the guy who is struggling with his hiking 'cause he has got old wooden windows drafty conditions, chill in the old nether regions muscles ache hence can't hike. Simples.

That picture is really odd, and not just because of the hiking. It is like someone has photoshopped 1970's sailors onto a 21st century boat.

The tool for measuring joint angles is a goniometer.

One Dr Jacques Rogge studied muscle strain while hiking back in the depths of time, I don't have the book with it in to hand at the moment though.

There has been a few sports sciencey studies on hiking over the years, often concluding it's a bad idea.

I'm not sure if Jon Emmett or Steve Cockerill are still following this board, however they seem to have also done some proper science homework on the subject too.  Jon led the NP hiker development, and I think we all know Steve's involvement in producing excellent kit (albeit with a naff enough logo to prevent a few of us buying it)

I was interested in Dan Holman's comment on that D1 photo Nessa posted, I do often wonder if uncorrected bad technique is the reason why my knees are utterly shot now.

really, it just can't be good for you.... check this poor fella out, he's about to split his sack.

hahaha... Mr Harris, you're on of those old boys who thinks teaching kids sail boat racing should be about fun and having a laugh, not elite athleticism and squad systems aren't you.... how quaint.

I have this idea that if they got a box that was oppie shaped, screwed a toe strap into the bottom of it, stick a mast and a sail in the front, pop it on a lake on a windy day, hey presto same job, more fun. Kids always prefer playing with the boxes anyway.

Is the idea of the Oppie hiking bench to wreck their knees before they ever start Laser sailing?

maybe there's less money in the RYA coffers now... so it's best filter off the weak earlier on than they used to.

What pray is that exactly, other than a product crying out for a consumer liability claim, it looks like something Medieval, right out of the Inquisition, people pay money for that? And we call it sport?

Somebody please, tell me they don't use it on kids, are childline aware?

I bet the RYA lawyers don't let it contain an 'RYA approved' label.

Given that the school my children go to make them run through a field knee deep in mud twice a week (and one of my offspring actually enjoys it, the other not so much...) officially torturing children is still very much the done thing, so why not put them on the rack, too?

I've not looked - does it retail for enough to buy a small country with the money?

I built my own hiking bench when I was in oppies! Better to get fit then get hurt when you get tired out on the race course!

Did the Trojans not put their newborns on the roof for their first night of life? No point in having weak babies in a warrior nation.

I think it was the Spartans, they also had the Agoge... which is a bit like RYA regional squad training in Lasers these days, except at least girls are allowed in- if they're butch enough.   Wink

I've just noticed and it's clicked, it says 'Opti'parts. so f**k me it genuinely is for kids and you really are getting kids to use things like that?

Seriously you couldn't write it never mind make it up, has no-one ever sued anyone?

Honestly, it's beyond wrong, I'm not joking now, that is seriously not right, hell compared to conkers, that needs bringing to the attention of the Health and Safety Executive.

Wrecking kids knees before they're even fully grown.

So sorry, because of my working class education I tend to confuse my Spartans with my Trojans and my kaftans with my togas.
