On reading the text it appears he shattered the record by 0.97 knots or about 1.74%...

that knee brace doesn't look very aero, surely got to be worth another massive 0.05 of a knot?

I think you need to appreciate how much 1 knot is as an improvement to one's PB in that particular field of competitive sailing....  the fact that it smashes a WR justifies the tone of the article imho.

Plus you might also want to check locations... it happened in France, not in Luderitz.  Most of the current speed champs are currently in Namibia, sailing on a custom built ditch that cost upwards of several million euros.  Do do forgive the french for a bit of patriotic hurrah for doing it on their own soil, well sea bed... if it happened in Weymouth or West Kirby the UK speed scene would be equally ecstatic.
