What is the recommendation/"rule of thumb" for the length of tackle required to secure large inflatable cylinders in a depth of about 10m on a reservoir. Under the mark is a heavy cocking weight and the ground weight is a lump (7 shades to lift!! ) which sinks into the clay lining.

Too short and the waves will get bounce the tackle along the bottom, too long the mark rides about.

Suggest you settle for 'over long' sinking warps & let the mark ride about.

On the assumption that your water does not have a perfectly flat bottom, you will need to have enough to cover the deepest point so it will automatically ride about when you drop it in a shallower part.

Competitors prefer to put up with a mark which is moving around a bit rather than chase a mark which has gone walkies down the res

If your mark is to be laid in the shallows,  there is merit in teaching members how to tie up the slack so that someone else can undo it without spending 10 mins sorting out the tangle

Hmm, Interesting problem.  Why not try a block on the bottom of the mark with the warp lead through it and the cocking weight on the free end.  You may have to reduce the cocking weight as its now putting twice as much pull on the mark but it will self adjust for depth down to 1/2 the maximum length of the warp.

Where I sail  is strongly tidal so we cant use this setup and have to suffer floating warps with a small sinker near the buoy.  That way  we have a reasonable chance of getting the ground tackle back at low water after some pillock in a powerboat (usually speeding) has driven over the mark and cut it free with their prop.  Maybe I should replace the warp next to the buoy with an old wire shroud and see if they can cut that :-)

Thanks for the replies - I now have a cunning plan which I will try at the weekend

Well, I tried Stingo's suggestion and it worked rather well until we fell foul of the knot-fairy

Mark II version will have a short length of chain directly underneath the bouy and a large steel ring that will be big enough for the knots to pass through. This is being prepared for next weekend.

All in all, the general concept is on the right lines - another exciting installment next week!
