I have been a 5-oh crew for 6 years but because of reasons out of my control I am no longer.
So am looking for something new to sail around the 5k mark (could be more for somthing good). I like event sailing more than club sailing but still like most still try and do a good amount when I can. I am 5 foot 8 and 87kg thinking about maybe a single hander as gets around the team mate thing but could have my mind changed on that. Midlands based I know you guys will have some ideas

Rich- depends where in the midlands you are but Draycote has a few options: - Solos - great fleet racing and 5k would buy a competitive boat - Lasers - very, very good fleet racing and a cracking bunch of guys, leave 3k in the bank and STILL get great racing in a competitive second hand boat? Seems a bit of no-brainer at your height and weight... - Dart 15 - one of the largest one design cat fleets in the country, nice guys and seem to have a relaxed, but competitive spirit. They like high winds sailing. - Moth - yep, the growing moth fleet at Draycote, you can spot them from their cheshire cat facial expressions - the boats are either really good fun, or they're all smacked up on all the epoxy fumes from their 'continuous improvement process' (bimbling and bodging to the rest of us)... not sure which. At 87kg would be towards the top end of the Moth fleet weight, but you'd be fine in any of the winds they actually sail in. (they jump ship to front ends of Fireballs and Freds when it's really light) - we also have handicap racing if none of the above floats your boat, a couple of ICs, Mustos, 700s and 300s seem to be 'core' segments if you want to ensure there is at least one other boat to properly race against. There's a D1 on the facebook group for just over £6k. heh, fair point, but it's sort of one the edge and a lot of guys will be travelling there just for the series. Mind you, I'm hoping my boat will be Grafham. Is that near enough?

Rich (I'm guessing you are the same Richard who used to crew for tim?) come and give a d1 ago. Little bit outside your budget mate but we have sailors of a similar age group as you mate most of us race at Oxford over the winter. But like you we all enjoy the circuit and the European events are simply awesome (so I hear) anyway send me a message on Facebook of you fancy giving one a go buddy. ------------- |

Many in the Phantom fleet are ex 505 crews including myself from a long time ago, so you would feel at home with us. Depends upon where in the midlands you are, Northampton has a fleet Farnmore has a couple including Olly aother ex crew. | Check out Ospreys at Blithfield. Two good ones for sale on apollo duck at just over 5k. Similar boats to 505s, but with much less complications. |

You are in ideal weight range for a Blaze (10.4m)... a few around in your part of the world and goodish sized meetings wherever run. You could also run a larger Halo rig (11.5m) on the same hull /spars if you like a laugh but you might be a tad too light for that one to be fully competitive in any real breeze. If there are good Phantoms around I'd try them as well - well try both classes at least and anything else offered. Just contact the CA's .. Maybe even toddle along to the Draycote Dash in November and see a range of classes in action... they can all sound ideal here ! 'One Size' or class is not necessarily for everyone after all. | I guess one should always mention the Int Canoe if someone is looking for a challenge. There are what look like a couple of reasonable starter boats on Apolloduck at the moment, and a good sorted recent boat on the class forum. |

RS600? or 700? Having dabbled with the 600, it's certainly a challenge but very rewarding. Wish I'd had the money to have one when they first came out. If you live somewhere windy a Contender. Keep some budget for going to events? |

Get a Phantom Rich, it will give you the best combination of event sailing and fleet racing at home I reckon. D1s look great but the assymetrics (both of them if you ignore the Vareo ;-p) never seem to get on that well on our water which is either because of how they're sailed or because the courses that are set for the symmetric boats don't suit assymetrics.
