Not sure if sufficient time has passed to talk about what happened but http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-24545570" rel="nofollow - This popped up on BBC recently it doesn't say how or why he became trapped.

Likely he was knocked unconscious by the multiple blows to the head.

Interestingly the report says he was found floating and not trapped.
