Hi,
I'm seriously considering buying an RS400 with a view to getting a class going in my local club. I was wondering how tight the crew weight of 23 to 26 stone is? Would we be very uncompetitive if we were much heavier? I'm north of 18st and my crew is around 11st. I know wind speed plays a big part but I'm just wondering if i'd be wasting my time.

At Burghfield, we have a guy (ex Phantom National Champion) who has been sailing them for 10 yrs or more.... I would guess that his all-up-weight has varied during that period from around 28 to 32 stone...
All depends on wind strength, waves, sailing technique etc.
And its not the light winds where you will feel a problem, but marginal planning.
Light and strong: few issues.

An Albacore can be competative with a crew weight between 21 and 31 stone combined!

That's why I got one to sail with my wife at a combined 27 stone.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to pick my battles.

30 knots easy there in that video...

Upwind just looked like bloody hard work. I'm beginning to think I want a keel boat!

Yeah but Rupert they hang on the side of keel boats just as hard, sometimes more so: (eg the popular "hanging off the life line doubled in half I'm going to be seasick" position), so would you really be any better off?
