My car went through its MOT today. The advisory was on the electrics on my 7-pin socket for towing the boat.

I queried this and was told that checking that the socket works is now part of the MOT and I could have failed if they hadn't waggled it and got it working.

Having got home tinternet suggests that it is only the 13 pin socket that should be electrically tested.

Has anyones else had their socket tested recently in an MOT?

According to what I can find it's a basic security/damage check of 7 pin sockets and a full electrical test of 13 pin sockets.

knew I had something to do last night after sailing! but it was blowing and I fell asleep when got home.

My car passed its MOT, yesterday . I asked my man who sits on the local MOT panel. His answer being, the tow bar and electrics if fitted have to be safe, no hanging down electrics or the like. Should be safe and working, but thats it. As Luke pie walker says for the 13 pin, full test.

I'm not sure the "working" bit applies to the 7 pin socket. Yes it should be safe as you say with no bits hanging down - but I don't think they should even be testing the 7 pin socket. Agreed on 13 pin socket though.

How many people have moved to the new 13-pin electrics?
Are towing boards still fitted with 7-pin electrics?
If I am planning to add a tow bar to a car I expect to keep for 10 years, should I specify 7- or 13-pin electrics on the car?
I have 2 boat towing boards and a small tip trailer with 7-pin plugs... but if any new boats / boards come with 13-pin, maybe I should change now??
Is there a simple adaptor available??

I can't imagine that even if there was a move to all new cars having 13 pin electrics that you would have any real difficulty getting a light board with a 7 pin connector, or at least an adaptor, for at least 10 years.

If you get a European bike carrier etc they come with 13 pin connector. You can get adapters that go both ways. We have 7pin on one car, 13 pin on the newer one. I have to say the 13 pin one is far superior, easy to attach and do far no annoying wiggles to get it working. But the bike carrier light board is also much better.
Suspect it should become industry standard, even without EU.

Yep adapters have been available for years as factory fitted electrics on many cars are 13 pin, certainly with German makes they are, and have been for at least 10 years.

I agree, functional test on 13P only.
My 7P failed because the flap was missing/busted off, and therefore was unable to securely hold the plug in place, despite the fact it takes 2 hands and a fair bit of wiggling to get the damned thing out.
