Hi

After I recently launched an Android App for calculating race results using the RYA PY Number system, a few people asked me to develop an IRC version which I have been working on.

I've now finished it and it is available for free on the Google Play Store for anyone with an Android phone. Please search under 'irc race calc' to find it.

This is the first version and I plan to add improvements over the next few weeks. In the meantime, it would be great to hear your thoughts on the app and any ways that I can improve it.

Thanks

John

It doesn't work at all. Firstly a high number is a faster boat, not a slower boat. Secondly I have never done average lap racing on IRC, I don't think that exists!

What I would really like to see is an app where you set a timer running at the start of the race and then press the names of each boat as they finish and it calculates the results. Then it would actually be useful. Otherwise I will just either get a time on time table out or carry on using the computer to calculate expected results. The beauty of having an app on the phone is that you can step on to any boat as tactician and work out the results quickly without a computer. Even better if you can input the series results and calculate them too!

Hi Laser193713

Have I completely misunderstood this IRC calculation then?

At the end of a race, how do you calculate a corrected time? If you can help with this that will be great, then I will re-issue the App so at least the maths works!

The Timer App is on my 'to do' list but will take a bit longer.

Thanks

John

Ooops!

Spotted my error. As we say in Scotland - what a numpty!

I will have the correction sorted within 24 hours so watch out for the update on Google Play Store.

Off to a meeting now for my day job.

Thanks again Laser193713

Presumably you could also do the same at mark roundings during the race to get the current status? ie a corrected time "Lap" time.

So you would need a "Lap" button and a "Finish" button similar to a stopwatch.

Hi

That's now corrected the calculation error - sorry!

And I have removed the average lap result function on your advice that it is redundant in this type of racing.

I'll be looking next at entering a local database of boats so that you can quickly look them up before doing the calculation.

Thanks

John

Hi Guys

As you may have noticed, this App was originally based on the PY numbers one and, at the moment, based on download figures, the PY App is the most popular, so the next update will be to that one.

I am now working on the local database option to allow users to enter their own PY numbers either to amend the RYA figures for boats, or to build a database of personal handicaps. When I have done that, I will translate that across to this IRC App so that you too can build your own databases.

I'll let you know when it is ready for you to download.

Thanks

John
