yes.
I use one every week to secure the main halyard to the shroud (so it doesn't flap against the mast)

Yes

Can you tie and construct a turks head?

Yes thanks

A rolling hitch was essential where I grew up, to attach your pulling boat to your frape.

Frape now has a very different and wider usage which could get a little confusing

But sculling was de rigour then too, like this (no that's not me)

I can scull (or I could), and even tie a rolling hitch - but a turks head? No way - I remember my father once spending most of a winter teaching himself how to tie one (blame my mother giving him the Ashley Book of Knots for Xmas!)

How about a Hangman's noose and other useful knotty tools for the Solo fleet.

Sheepshank?
Sheetbend?
Reef
Bowline (everyone must know this one)
Figure eight (ditto)?

all in my and most windsurfers arsenal of useful rope tools I'm sure..

not forgetting the Granny of course.

I can happily prepare a hangman's noose cheaper than a single from stansted to Geneva on easyjet... I'll even charge a fair price rather than a 'bin end' jimmy green special!

I was given the Ashley book of knots for a birthday. Whilst it shows all the knots it is not(no pun intended) the easiest book to learn from. The turks head and monkeys fist are really quite simple but do need a fair bit of time and patience.
I always thought the Ashley book of knots would be my choice for the desert island plus of course lots and lots of line.
On another note with the demise of three strand rope will we also lose the eye splice, long splice and back splice?
When I was showing cows I used to make all the rope halters myself eye splice and back splice.

Sorry but I find the idea of cows tying knots udderly ridiculous Smile. Daftest thing I've herd in a long(horn) time Smile. Sounds like a bit of bull to me Smile Still, might as well milk it for all it's worth Smile

Here's a rather handy website http://www.animatedknots.com/ - http://www.animatedknots.com/

Just watch those knots tie themselves!

Rolling hitch - useful when flying. A length of rope instead of a belt, tiedwith a rolling hitch... infinitely adjustable and passes through the scanner.

Probably the most useful knot I know.

Gordon

PS Are here really sailors who don(t know how to scull? How do they manage?

Yes, they call themselves the Dinghy Cruising Association. They have no need of sculling as if the wind is below 7 knots or above 10 knots they fire up the outboard motor.

As a proud member of the DCA, and owner of a boat that has no outboard... we scull and row as necessary.

And I use a rolling hitch to apply a block and tackle to the jib halliard if I want to tighten it.

A rolling hitch is also essential on bigger boats if you get a  riding turn on a winch.

To scull a boat, you need a transom. That rules out many of the boats owned by people on here!

I presume most boats have a rudder that is attached in some way to the rest of the boat. So there is somewhere to rest a scull.

And of course Welsh sailors, used to crossing the ocean in their coracles know that you can scull without the oar/paddle touching the boat!
