Paul McKenna did some weird mind tricks on Maureen Lipman on telly last night in a programme about memory.

So...does anyone know of someone using such hypnotism or NLP to improve their sporting/sailing performance. I'm intrigued as to whether it would work. I'm also concerned about where the ethical boundaries may lie, but first things first.

Could hypnotism improve our windy day gybing? Or fear of capsizing? Could it make the pain of hiking fade to a background nothingness?

Or are such mental techniques an exercise in merde-polishing?

Sports psychologists use hypnotherapy as part of their toolkit...

Not sure about hypnosisWacko

Visualisations work for me though....I discovered the technique years ago when I was a half way reasonable squash player. I would first watch Jahangir Khan playing the perfect backhand volley cross court drop and then imagine myself doing it.....It worked, well at least it improved that particular shot for me.....I  do the same with sailing....

.....I can now sail like Jahangir Khan, crapLOL

I've covered some visualisation techniques in talks and my book and believe they are really useful. And the principles behind The Inner Game of Tennis are extremely enlightening.

But it seems to me the hiking all day angle needs something a bit stronger. There is nothing on that link of pondmonkey's about improving endurance/discomfort-tolerance, which is interesting in it's omission.

McKenna made Maureen talk about her dog winning Cruft's as if it really happened and she was absolutely comfortable with the fabrication. It made me wonder if we are only scratching the surface.

Hypnotism doens't work on people that are sceptical about it... it is entirely about suggestion, guilibility and people "playing along".

NLP and CBT are more reliable than hypnotism...sadly they require lots of hard work.
Give me a quick fix any time!

I find after several Brandy and Babychams I sail far better than I normally sail, sadly I am still in the bar at the time, a fact well demonstrated on the Saturday evening at the Forumites event and no doubt every club in the land.

I get the idea ... sort of like the longer you stand at the bar the better your sailing was earlier that afternoon... or last week ... or last year  ... and especially 'when you were a lot younger' Wink  I find 'London Pride' or 'Doom Bar' works well for me but I'm happy to be introduced to Brandy and Babysham sometime.

On a different subject but not a thousand miles away from 'Doom Bar' country there looks to be a likely 'gathering' of Icons at Falmouth Week in August on an informal basis ... Can you make it and cope with the 'Southern Tropics' in August ?

It's a difficult on the best yachtsman's ale... I'm afraid Adnams gets it, purely for longest standing loyalty - best drunk at The Butt & Oyster in Pinmill; however I'd be lying if the Doom Bar hasn't become a bit of post windsurfing favourite when out in the back country.

Going back to NLP, being pushed for use in business for motivation and personal effectiveness. Is said to work for some but like above comment, need to believe in it for it to work. My boss recommended it, got some coaching, struggled with it and did some research. Talked about it with friends both of whom are academics and clinical psychologists. Sorry to go off message but as an engineer/ scientist all my working life I much prefer to deal with facts even if they are a little stretched under heavy lubrication Wink
I will have a look at August diary, happy memories of a Prince of Wales Week at Falmouth and some good food at Mark's Seafood Bar.
