Apparently today is the first day of spring and we should all be casting aside our drysuits and digging out our shorties! well, maybe not just yet.... But the clocks change soon and evening racing will start, there will be Easter regattas to go to and lots of fun to be had by all (with lashings of gb for grumpf)
So, who is going where? Is anyone doing anything exciting?

Youth Worlds in the 49er hopefully to kick off the summer. Potentially the Europeans too :D Though just going out in 10-15c and sunshine is going to be great too!

wednesday night racing... possibly the best sailing ever? It's cheeky almost shouldn't be happening; normal folks can't believe we do it after work/school/college and to top it off, nearly everyone actually has a beer/softie afterwards too... why not, we're out already right?
The unexpected nature of getting to go sailing on an evening is just amazing... wherever you are blessed to do it.
Other plans... off to Spain this weekend to get the other boat sorted. It needs a new outboard sadly, so that's a couple of grand on something really not very exciting in sailing terms. We've got a Solo open coming up, so I'll do that as it doesn't involve taking a mast down; the FOM of course, can't miss my one and only PY racing of the year (at least it's PY racing with the right attitude though) All other travelling will be limited to windsurfing, as it's far less grief and aggro than dinghy towing- Easter booked in Cornwall already, National Watersports Festival also in the diary.

Looking forward to a full season back in the V3k after a couple of years in an L3k (surprisingly different).
Looking forward to lots of lightweight, early-planing. Will miss, however, seeing the PY-whingers stifle their moans as they remembered that the L3k had a 'real' (in their eyes) PY.
That's a lovely pic you posted 'Nessa. Very evocative and encouraging at a glance, esp when clicked to full-screen. I was about to save it use as a screen background until I looked closely and saw - argh - Solos and Albacores!

Finn sailing, Wadewitz Trophy, Fairhope YC, Mobile Bay, after sailing, swimming in the club pool then drinking Mount Gay rum with coke, ice and a slice of lime on the veranda, watching the pelicans and the sun setting over the bay. Perfect, the flight is booked. Seems a long way away on a wet Wednesday afternoon in Pudsey.

J80 Nationals, Mersea Week, hopefully at least a few days of Cowes Week, IRC East Coast Championships, hopefully Round The Island, bit of Wednesday night and Friday night racing and I think that's everything. I would have been going to the J80 Worlds in Marseille but unfortunately I can't worm my way out of a week of college. Looking forward to it all though, can't wait to get exams out the way and just sail...

Fairly quiet year really. Just waiting to get to the masters circuit (few more years to go) when will start travelling a bit more again as have very little interest in the Q's anymore.

Birthday Bike Ride the traditional get go for a new season has been postponed to Apr5th this year due to extreme weather induced depression, no sailing appears to be planned by our sailing club for Easter either so the Alto will wait a little longer, going to the annual dinner dance of my new lake club this saturday and will sail hungover the following day after due gangham style dancing diligence..
Not sure when the windsurf racing starts tried to get in the club last night to sort my rig out but alzheimers has removed the door entry code, so will have to attempt that again this weekend.
Got a kitesurfing Mauritius trip for later in April and I may end up a born again kiter if I like some of the new stuff we have on offer this year.
Have a wizard wheeze planned for the Alto, saw it on the Icon, a sort of dangling pole that hangs down which I reckon I could fit to the Alto to goose wing the kite, I'm thinking crank the wing wang hard over AND the dangly pole the kite and we could dead run all over that Merlin if conditions are such that we can't blitz them by reaching hot. Going to get a new kite and maybe a new main for this season.
So all in all lots to look forward to if ever the bloody sky stops falling on me..
Just got to snap out of this gloomy mood, with any luck I'll meet up with that nice Auntie Stella over the weekend she generally offers an answer at the bottom....

Like Mark C, all booked up for the B14 Euros and Worlds in July. Going out a few days early- the Tour de France goes to St Malo a couple of days before the euros, so it should be fun to go see that. (and lots of road cycling. I'm not a slim bloke. I'm doing the RideLondonSurrey 100 two weeks after the worlds. I need to get practice in...)

Doesn't the Alto pole come back far enough to work pretty well as is?
My mission for this year is firstly to hope for some F4 open meetings instead of F6. Also to have a go in a few different boats. There are a few boats in the 'things to try before I'm 50' list.

Now that the consultant has kindly informed me not to sail my 700 until after my next MRI in August, I'm a bit stumped!!!
He did however say I could sail something a little less extreme as long as I was extremely careful not to bang my head. So it looks like its going to be a year in the Grad!

Not really got past planning a coaching weekend this weekend (won't be very summer-like), but the cvrda National Rally and Minisail Nationals at Hunts in August are inked in, as are the Lightnings (though they are in the autumn.... Mostly I'll be teaching Juniors, I'd think, and then hoping for a long, sunny summer holiday with the kids, maybe in Brittany with a boat or 2.

we have lots of courses on, an open day coming up, the kids' summer sprint series is running again, plus there's Boat Camp - a new thing for us. Then there's a Challenger open at Grafham Sailability and the cvrda national rally.

I pick the new bike up soon (isn't cyclescheme great!) and am looking to do more cycling than sailing this year.
Dropping out of the open circuit for the 2nd year running and haven't sailed this year yet.
Gutted that funds haven't allowed us to get a double hander - so close to an Alb - but two kids at Uni on minimum loans and supporting another living away isn't conducive to sailing.
Looking possiblly to have a week away at Pyefleet week - never done it before.
Hopefully the sailing mojo will return at some stage.

For the first time I have managed to stretch my summer my holiday to three weeks in Carrick Roads (that's Falmouth Week plus two.) Surely the weather Gods this time will deliver a handful of balmy days to dinghy cruise to places like the Tolverne Smugglers pub and the Pandora Inn and even across to the Helford River so the less enthusiastic sailors in the family might come...

I will, didn't they ban that system on the 200 because it was too fast?
It'll only work in sub/marginal planing conditions when the bloody Merlin can often out strip us, the Alto pole lets you run pretty deep, even square, but half the spinnaker is still behind the main, only the foot gets dragged out to weather to improve the entry, I'm sure if you could gybe the spinnaker then ram the clew out to weather with a suitable dangle pole thing then the combination of all that sail area would propel us significantly faster in sub displacement conditions, so figure it's worth a punt.

I suspect the real reason it was banned was it didn't fit the image of an apparent wind boat. Which is a bit dubious on a boat with a four figure PY. But we have to admit the formula worked, delivered a good circuit of people enjoying the boat. We're too big for it, so it's of limited interest.
Poling out goosewinged may work well at certain points, but the transition to 'normal sailing mode' is probably messy and spoils things more often than you get a net gain.
Merlins, with their raking rigs and 8ft poles are supremely versatile, I give them that, it's a trade you make against the hooligan power and simplicity of the 400 in its element. I would have hoped the Alto blended the two, but having a trapeze, it compares against different reference points.

| read the "RS Square Running System" thread for something of a second opinion on that front. | Perhaps Grumph, you are expecting a bit much to outperform a Merlin in lighter airs with your, surely clapped out four year old kite! Also the AltO kite shape is a compromise shape for sailing deep as well as apparent wind sailing and in lighter non marginal planing conditions it does pay to sail higher, again depending on tide. The Merlin has to have some good points , if only light airs running! As RS400@C says the Merlin is a very versatile boat and the change from with gangly to without will be messy. Oh, don't forget Grumph, the AltO is supposed to be a simple uncomplicated boat!

and another great example, that it doesn't matter what the boat geek super computer churns out, good sailing is defined by those around you... the RS200 is a fantastic boat, offering versatile sailing at club, cirucit and championship level... no one gives an airborne copulation that it 'technically' would be better off with a symmetric kite, or indeed no kite at all!

I'd be cautious about trying that idea - there is a massive difference beween a lightweight tapered 2.1m 'dangly' on a 3.5m jib and what you would need on an Alto to dead run the spinnaker. I think it is possibly best to accept the Alto for what it is rather than 'wish' an extra complication on it. You could more easily go for a conventional spinnaker in the first place and treat it like a 505 ... but that would be missing the point as well.
Not much will dead run in lighter winds like a Merlin with the Alto I'd have thought that when windier, or upwind and on many more reachy courses it would significantly faster in any event.

This year is all about building the extension so sailing will be minimal but some things can't be given up easily. First planned event is to a beautiful location - Wales' best kept sailing secret - Clywedog http://cvrda.org/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=25&pos=1 - http://cvrda.org/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=25&pos=1 then a combined club and cvrda weekend at Roadford - can we have some decent weather this year? Ullswater will be our main break and then cvrda rally at Hunts and great hospitality with Nessa (Wingin' It) and co.
Apart from that we hope to sail some Tuesday or Wednesday evenings too as it's such a bonus to do a full days work AND go sailing.

This weather really is shocking, I can't remember a time when my Magnolia hadn't bloomed by my birthday and usually it's in extreme bud by Mar 1st. I'd hoped to go for a bit of a windsurf tomorrow (Golden Day) but right now there's a wind that will cut through you like an ice knife blowing about force 7 down the channel and leaden skies with snow threatened.
It's been going on so long, really depressing so I'm equally depressed to read your event is cancelled, to cold even for wood botherers eh?
