Hi new to this forum, need some help on replacing my first class 8 with similar lifting keel sportsboat.Keel mechanism must be good as need to raise it and leave it on a mooring.Would love something faster and the same size or slightly bigger to sail under ECHO (irish HCap) thanks

Tricky. The boats I can think of that size all have fixed keels. SB3 is worth considering as a more modern sportsboat with a lifting keel but it is a lot smaller and is a "dayboat" without a "lid" so not directly comparable to a FC8.

Haven't seen one for years. I saw a boatshow model and it struck me as a bit fragile; just an impression maybe.

Far better than an First class 8 , well in terms o speed , used to sail em occaisonaly as for fragile well dare I say there are no two exactly alike !!!, I sailed a fragile one - went like a rocket and a not so fragile (ie you could stand anywhere on it !) , went like a dog .

Gr8 boats if you buy the right one , but research very carefully and if you want fast fragility is way to go .

The boats I sailed were new at the time .

We also could pace just about anything up wind 35- 40 foot and beat melges downwind because sigma 8 has huge mast head kite . No Corks then to thrash tho !!

and when all went t*ts up bulb on keel would bring it back up without wet antics !! one VERY windy race at Nats proved this

Weren't they new in around 95? Therefore "fragile" then probably means "falling apart" today. Interesting comment that the build was variable; if memory serves they were built in Croatia; hence cheap.

yup Croatia !!!!

95 time flies

When they fell out of fashion you couldn't give one away , they now have regained value .

trust me some are more equal than others !!!, but when you get to know some "one designs" tis often the case !

As to how they have faired over time only a current Sig 8 sailor could tell , they have prob gained weight - got more flexible .

Some had extra lead fitted in bilge for better sportsboat rating .

If you mean - are they problems, the usual advice is to hire a marine surveyor. Although personally I didn't last time I bought a boat. I just spent a lot of time crawling over them looking for problems.

If you mean - is it a quick one, you can only look at the racing record. That can be hard to disentangle from the skills or otherwise of previous owners. Funnily enough, the nationals winner is usually rumoured to have a "fast boat".

Rogers generally has a good reputation for build quality. Can't say any more than that on the W27.

To maybe give a tuppence onn  the original, the k6 or SB3 seem excellent no accomodattion boats

the 8m as discussed above- bendy foredeck. Mast  head  blaster but I've seen  them capsized!

to quote a former owner " everything was fine until  you were doing  17kntts then the keel cavatates and  you broach "

what about the platu  25- doesn't  draw  much
isis 21?

i would highly recommend the sb3.

i went to the grand prix event at seaview this weekend.

50 boats.  amazing racing, great boats, 3 or 4 crew. pretty sure there will be large fleets at cork week and cowes week

sigma 8, maybe fast but under irc they are rubbish handicap.

speak to laser or class association they are fully loaded with info.  roughly20 grand for new but there are a few 2nd hand boats around as well.
