According to this artical http://www.sail-world.com/UK/Gladwells-Line:-Riding-shotgun-on-Emirates-Team-NZs-AC72-at-43.6kts/103801 - http://www.sail-world.com/UK/Gladwells-Line:-Riding-shotgun-on-Emirates-Team-NZs-AC72-at-43.6kts/103801
They were also recording speeds of over 43 knots. No matter your feeling on th eAC format these are impressive machines and i would love to go for a ride on one.

Interesting that they reckon the beam fairing was actually creating apreciable aero-lift!

I am probably missing something, but why were they concerned at foiling upwind, surely this is considerably faster

I imagine it has to do with control. If the boat is being lifted by the fairing, then there is likely to be a crash.

Or does the AC prohibit upwind foiling?

With 50 knots of apparent breeze across the deck all sorts of aero effects are going to be evident!

they are a one off case, but i do think that if they were foiling upwind they wouldnt have buried it on the bear away

i think their foils are designed to give a good VMG when going downwind on the the foil, so if you foiled upwind on them there would be appreciable leeway
