Trouble is, I'm sure I've seen better pictures featured on Y&Y over the last year than any of them. Many of them by Tom.

There's some great photos in there and some real sh*t too.  Some people need to step away from the Photoshop actions and go an make a cup of tea.

Flicking through them, Marc Bow's shot of the VO70 Camper is a particualrly horrendous bit of HDR abuse. http://www.yachtracingimageoftheyear.com/award2012/marc-bow/ - Hideous

The oppi one is pretty cool

No, the Oppi one is massively over-sharpened and has ruined a perfectly nice photo.

I think 2547 might have meant this one... which is cool, but not as good as Tom's shot:

That's definitely better than the Oppie photo I was thinking of, the one with loads of them crossing a harbour.

yep agreed, the big fleet one was a cracking photo- ruined by over-processing.

That's the one.  Not all Photoshop is bad though, this photo has been Photoshopped more than most of the others put together, the difference is it has been done pretty well IMO and the overall effect suits the subject.

It does seem remarkable that some clearly talented photographers manage to screw up their images quite so successfully.

I was going to vote for the Oppie photo (the single Oppie, not the fleet one) but it asked me to log into Facebook. Is there another way of voting?  In my opinion Facebook is right up there with a Solo in the enjoyment and satisfaction stakes....

Got to agree with most of what looked to be perfectly reasonable shots being ruined by the use of photoshop or by the looks of some of them, instagram which is even more outrageous. Vote Tom

it's always so tempting to endlessly fiddle with a photo in post processing, there's always the possibility of making it 'better', though it usually ends in failure. sometimes it really works; a couple of years ago sailing anarchy had an amazing tilt shift shot looking down from the top of the mast on a big yacht.

for my money it's a toss up between the open 60 having its self-righting test, the helicopter shot of hydroptere or the helicopter shot of the big yacht surfing down the waves...

I think the point in this thread is to make people vote for Tom's photo, he is Y&Y pic editor so come on guys, support the magazine! Don't go voting for silly kids falling out of oppies!

Surely we are voting for a photo, not a photographer? I'd happily vote for Tom in the "Nicest Good Egg Photographer" catagory. Which would make as much sense as some of the other catagories to vote on - I've not sailed any of the boats, so dunno which is best (and lets face it, most of them won't be produced anyway in the dinghy catagory) don't know the people and wasn't at  the events.

Agreed, I'm sure Tom would rather win through merit than through than through a sort of nepotism.

You may vote for whoever you like. I had nothing to do the the starting of this thread but do appreciate all the votes for my image people are making. This part of the competition does seem to be about who can use social media most effectively to get their image going viral. There are some amazing images in the competition that I would more than happily vote for were I not competing against them.

Something isnt quite right with the voting.

I liked a photo, but the vote seemed to be allocated to
http://www.yachtracingimageoftheyear.com/award2012/ainhoa-sanchez/ - http://www.yachtracingimageoftheyear.com/award2012/ainhoa-sanchez/
rather than the pic I liked.
That was the picture posted to my Facebook.

That could explain why a picture to two lead-mines with dodgy spinnaker work has so many votes.

I've just looked at the images and they all seem to have 275 votes......

I also get that I've voted for the Ainhoa pic, rather than my own that I actually voted for.

Nope I started it- it's a good photo:

A) the composition and capture
B) the inspiring subject matter
C) unlike Veruca Salt, you're a good egg and this is partly viral (Facebook voting)

Anyway, good luck- hope it's not a fudge.
