Hi,

I was wondering if someone can explain to me how the 'Platex' works on Ecover III and Aviva, I have read the article on another sailing website but it doesn't actually show what it is. Is it just a solid piece that drops out of the bottom of the hull, what shape is it? I understand what it does, and how the other trim tabs on Open 60s work, but not this one. I hope someone can fill in the blanks.

Thanks

Tom

Its sometimes called an interceptor in powerboats etc... In fact I think Artemis 2 had a similar device but didn’t call it a platex (but its been on and off during trials so I’m not sure where they are now) Its just a flat vertical plate that can be lowered 10-20mm bellow the hull surface and affects the flow beneath the hull

Artemis' device was fitted on the transom, whereas the Owen Clark boats have theirs fitted just forward of the transom - as far as I know that’s the only difference deserving the fancy name.

Its used in much the same way as the other wedges and trim tabs - It allows a boat designed with less rocker than usual to create an artificial rocker so the boats trim,, particularly in knarley conditions, can be changed

Thanks Isis, that has cleared it up, I think I understand now. Is there any chance you could draw a quick diagram of it in the down position?
