Hi all.  i am repairing a major bodge by a previous owner in my 420.

Can anyone advise on the best materials to use.  I am fine working with GRP.  I made my own slalom kayak.  But what is the best way of tackling this?

You obviously need to install a proper drainage bung in the little hole.

The easy fix for the transom flap hole is simply to tape I over with insulation tape and, if you do capsize and need to drain the boat quickly, simply push it out from inside.

It may sound like a bodge but if you install a nice sheet of Perspex with hinges it will leak anyway.

I don't think the transom flap or bung hole are the problem. The bigger issue is the split between the transom and the hull.
Not sure on the ply thickness but I'd imagine is thin, after all its a 420. Id dremel an inch rebate all around the hole, clean it up and lay in a few plys of glass cloth at 0 and 90. I'd then fill from the outside with gelcoat. To properly finish the job id tidy up the repair inside and repaint.

Agreed about the split.  I have used my dremel to grind out all the weak area.  I have also coarse sanded the inside and out.  Good advice on the use of cloth.  Just need to get the dinghy somewhere warm enough to get the resin and gelcoat to go off.

Thanks rich.  I have the drain bung.  I took it out to get the sander in.  I have found this place   http://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/default.aspx

They seem to have everything I will need.  Seems they do a combi matting made up of chopped matt and woven rovings.  Seems perfect.   

So the large hole should be there?   It has very untidy edges which is why I thought it had been holed.  Looking forward to getting it repaired and ready to sail.

I wouldn't bother with anything with matt in. Just use woven, preferably mostly with fibres crossing 45/45.

The large hole is for a transom flap, agreed cut amazingly badly. I'd keep it, but seal the flap up with tape until you need it.
