Mast Float

   Right as some of you know I'm new to sailing and before anyone says a phantom too fast enough c for a newbie, the reason I got on is because I'm 20st so need something that will pull me. Anyway moving on and I know this is probably not the done thing in a boat like a phantom but I would feel better if I used a mast float for now, so my question is:

Is there a reason I shouldn't on a phantom with a carbon S3 mast?

If so what type, the longer skinny ones or the crewsaver balloon type?

If I brought the balloon type which litre should I use?

	It depends where you are sailing. Personally I really dislike the things, and they have some formidable risks attached. I'd only consider one if sailing in shallow water with good safety cover and not open sea. The reason: If a boat lies on its side it will drift downwind faster than you can swim in almost any conditions. So if you lose contact with the boat your only chance is someone picking you up. It's happened to me a couple of times, and even the Solent is an awfully big place if you are a head bobbing in the water.

	Covenham reservoir, I have no idea how deep or big it is as I've not been there yet, today is my first day there, I use to live in Surrey so done my little amount of sailing there. Very good point though. I think if i ever sail on the sea then I won't use one.

	So, first question to the guys at Covenham, "does the mast often hit bottom if a boat turtles?". Only if the answer is 'yes' do you want a float. Otherwise, make clambering over the side onto the 'board your goal in capsizes until it becomes second nature; falling in the water wastes too much time and, more important, energy.
